Dear 18-Year-Old Me
Dear 17-year-Old Me, As I sit in the back yard of our childhood home, watching your future children learn to ice skate on the same frozen pond we did, my mind wanders to the quintessential points in our history that shaped the person writing you this letter. I was recently asked the question, “If time travel was no longer a fictional myth read among the pages of novels, would you go back to your high school graduation and change a part of your history?” After extensive pondering, my answer to such a narrative is not as simple as ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Let me explain.
Songs my ADHD has on REPEAT
Songs my ADHD has on Repeat... Yes, you read that title correctly. According to researchers, a side effect of severe ADHD is listening to the same songs on repeat for a short burst of time. Considering I’ve been doing this since the dawn of the original iPod shuffle, where I could clip that beautiful silver bullet to my belt loop and walk around like an absolute boss, I’ve had ADHD much longer than originally thought.
Ultimate National Park Playlists
This year, much of my free time has been spent obsessively planning a month-long road trip for myself and my closest friend. Both of us are at the quintessential part of our 20’s where if we don’t take the time to drop everything and explore, we won’t ever commit to it again. With pressure to build our careers, and grad school looming over the horizon, we are taking the time to make the most of this beautifully, chaotic period of growth in our lives.
7 Billion Authentic Stories
In the wise words of Jim Carrey, I'm tired of living my life out of fear disguised as practicality. He once stated, "What we want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it."
If Schitt's Creek, Then Ted Lasso
We can all agree 2020 was the year the cinematic world hit its metaphorical ‘pause’ button: shows were indefinitely put on ice, movies pushed back (I’m talking the ENTIRE Marvel Universe), and movie theatres shutting down across the globe. However, this figurative fall of cinema helped give rise to the continued success of Netflix, Disney+, Hulu & HBO Max. With billions of people in quarantine, these streaming platforms helped sooth the boredom, or distract the crazy kids now home 24/7, with readily available shows to binge at every hour of the day.
Love For All
An age old debate: Why show your partner you love them 24/7 when Valentine’s Day exists?... because apparently your love is defined by the flowers, chocolates and cards you buy on the 14th of February every year. Call me the Grinch of V-day but there's no way my heart is going to grow 4x its size because my partner gave me an over-sized teddy bear that says "I love you" on its paw. However, my distaste for V-day stems from two reasons beyond this one major theme: lack of equality & focus on self-love.
Tik-Tok: The Raw Truth
Tik-Tok: the app that controls the masses. Kids like Charli D-Amelio and Addison Rae have amassed millions in their net worth over simple 59 second dancing videos. But whether you're a 16-year-old kid making up catchy dances to viral songs, or a grandparent getting famous for being cooler than most kids in today’s generation, this app caters to you and everyone in-between.
Setting the Foundation
I consider myself born into the most progressive generation for women in soccer. Being able to watch women like Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, and Shannon Mac Millan take over the field with their determination and raw skill was nothing short of astounding. To a five-year-old girl, whose entire life was centered around soccer since the day she took her first steps, these women were absolute super heroes. They paved the way for girls all over the world to believe they were enough, that they could play next to the men and make something for themselves.
