The End
They both knew it was over. Things had been going down hill since Jenny died. Jen was the glue that held the family together. Her parents, Jeff and Beth, adored the young girl. With her bright red hair and rosy complexion, she lit up any room she walked into. This may be a biased opinion on his part, but Jenny was the most talented eight year old Jeff had ever seen. She kept him in stitches with her corny jokes and funny little dances. She was always a happy child and her happiness was infectious.

How to Load a Wheelchair into a Car
You have issues with your legs and now need to use a wheelchair to get around. Most people will consider this terrible news, but not you! You understand all the advantages—better parking, no waiting in lines, people are constantly offering to do things for you. One factor you didn’t consider is that you drive and will have to transport the chair. Dammit!

Wilson's Pond
Winters in Vermont are brutal. Temperatures drop so low, the inside of your nose freezes. Everything gets covered in thick ice that gives the appearance of icing. The landscape becomes a blank white canvas from November to March. This doesn't stop us from our weekly hockey game on Wilson’s Pond.

The boy woke up especially early. It was a hot autumn day and the last day of the Talavera de la Reina bullfighting season. He had devoted the entire season doing an assortment of jobs so he could buy a ticket for today’s spectacle. His hero, Joselito, would be in the ring and he would not miss it.

Billy Partridge and the Pear Tree
He owned the tree, but technically Mister Wilson didn’t own the land where it currently stood. Developers had cleared a vast tract of land to build new houses for all the GIs returning from the war in Europe. Money ran out before they could finish the massive home on that piece of property, and construction ceased. After remaining vacant for a time, Mr. Wilson decided the cleared field that abutted his land would be the ideal spot for a fruit tree and unofficially declared the area his.

Wrapped in brown craft paper and dotted with stamps showing its journey around the world, it rested on the kitchen table next to his unfinished lunch. He slowly ran his fingers through his scraggly gray beard. A gesture he invariably made when he was deep in thought, which often happens when you live alone in the middle of nowhere like him.

Gram died, leaving us with eighty-three years of junk to sort through. To her, everything in the old barn wasn’t junk. It was memories. It was life encapsulated in old furniture, books, old toys, and paper. So much paper. I’ll never understand the greatest generation’s obsession with paper.
