The Old Barn
That old barn was my saving grace, and it wasn’t until much later that I learned just how true that was. I had been walking for hours when I first set eyes on it. The rain had stopped long ago, but I was still dripping wet; my body couldn’t separate the sensations of water falling from my hair, from the tears running down my face, and the blood pouring from my wounds. The closer I got to that old barn, the more it seemed to tower over me, and the slower my pace became. Far off in the distance, it seemed small; but once I was standing in its shadow, it was mountainous and grand.

Hello, my name is M(A)E(L)
Our names are a massive part of how we communicate with the world. In one sense, they’re just sounds we make to get each other’s attention –it would get pretty confusing if we all called each other, “Hey, you!” Yet, on the other hand, our names provide a sense of identity and belonging –they set us apart from everyone else. Even when we meet someone with the same first name as us, our middle and last names will differ, and even the reason that name was chosen for us.

Note from the Author: To be completely honest, this is my sixth entry for the Members-Only Challenge. This contest has sparked something in me that I can hardly contain; which means I am also having trouble containing my thoughts. Every piece I write gets closer and closer to what I’m really trying to say, but it’s such a grand topic to cover in less than five thousand words. This time, though, I will focus my thoughts, feelings and desires, so that I can share with you the dream in my heart.

Earthship-Inspired Holistic Homes
Has anyone ever shared their dream with you, and suddenly it’s all you’ve ever wanted, as well? In a split second, your own hopes and dreams evolve as you are gifted someone else’s. It’s not that your life becomes theirs; it’s that you weren’t really living until that moment. The individual “someone” doesn’t really matter –in the grand scheme of things; they were simply a way for the Universe to show you the dream you had been searching for.

Changing the World
Even as a writer, I’m having trouble finding the words to describe what I’m most passionate about. My highest excitement in life isn’t something I can snap a picture of and explain; it’s a vision for a way-of-life that I’ve been longing for since my very first breathe. If you can hold on throughout this rollercoaster of hopes and dreams, you may find that this life is calling to you, as well.

Revolutionary Community Design
Imagine a life of freedom –a life of balance and harmony. What do you see? Are you excited to get out of bed in the morning? Do you awake feeling well-rested? Do you feel like have to go somewhere to start your day? Do you eat when you’re hungry, and rest when you’re tired? Do little challenges frustrate you? Are you living in the present moment? Are you happy?

Making a Life, Not Earning a Living
What are you most passionate about? Does something come to mind right away, or are you having trouble? Is it something you do frequently, or something you’re always wishing you had time for? Have you shaped your life around what excites you the most, or do you rarely think of it? Do you have children; and do you know what they’re most passionate about?

Follow Your Highest Excitement
I am no longer searching for hobbies and activities to fulfill me, because I have come to realize that life itself is all the fulfillment I need. As I write these words, however, I’m reflecting back on those frequent moments when life has exhausted me; I collapse to my knees and scream at the Universe, “What’s the fucking point?!” And in all honesty, the last time I broke down like that was only 16 hours ago. I fall into these states –into an abyss that consumes me– and the thought of having to breathe and eat to stay alive seems overwhelming, exhausting and truly pointless. What’s the point of keeping this physical, fleshy body alive while I feel my heart aching for something I can’t see yet?

Gramma Lives OnTop Story - June 2021
When I think back on my life, and my childhood, it seems that crocheting has always been a part of it. One of my grandmother’s was a knitter, and the other a crochetter, and I remember being quite young when I was drawn to that single hook. Now, I am not so sure if it was the actual art of crocheting that enticed me, or time spent with my Gramma –side by side on the couch as she showed me how to start. I was only 9-years-old when I first felt the cool touch of that stainless steel hook; and although I spent many years making long chains, or the odd dish cloth, my skills have grown exponentially since then.

Flames & Flowers: Feeling Freedom
Prologue: Fleeing // Escape The fires had persisted for six days before I decided to move on. I was living in constant fear, with nausea in every inch of my body, watching everything I had ever known burst into flame and slowly turn to dust. I am still in fear, and without a home, but at least I am not watching my home burn.

Reusing is the Goal
I’m not going to beat around the bush here... Little changes just aren’t going to cut it anymore. We no longer have the luxury of time, which means I am no longer interested in little steps toward change. What we need is an entirely new lifestyle, and to connect to the Earth in a way that is foreign to many.

Reducing is the Transition
I’m not interested in “small steps to sustainability,” because those steps fall short. What I am interested in is a complete overhaul of human life and behaviour, and that is what I’ve dedicated my life to. I am committed to looking past the shallow solutions that are being offered to us, to live a life that I choose for myself.
