February 1917. Russia is on her knees from the crippling effects of the Great War. Her people are starving, and tired of the never-ending death toll of their fellow Russians. In Petrograd, the people’s anger has been boiling for years, and it erupts in the February revolution. However, it was composed not only of anti-Tsarist Petrogradians, but also a large number of Russian women taking part in the International Women’s day march. A few months later, the Bolshevik leader Lenin declares all women and men equal to each other it’s fantastic to think that the politically backwards Russia, which had very traditional cultural standards, granted women the right to vote before England did, a country frequently portrayed as a great, modernised power.
