I waved at Angel as I entered the bar. A light rain had just started. I shook the drops off my coat and hung it on the rack by the door. Angel, chatting with a customer, looked over momentarily and waved back.
A New Home for Singapore's Stray Cats
Samuel Chua grew up playing with stray cats. “In public housing in Singapore, it’s illegal to keep a cat,” he said, “So if I wanted a pet, I had to play with the cats that lived in the common areas around our building.” Many Singaporeans today still live in soaring, high-density apartment buildings where pets are not allowed. “This is why people come here,” said Sam.
Thrifting Through Life
Thrifting is in my blood. I can't walk past a garage or yard sale without stopping, and I can never resist going into a op-shop anywhere in the world. I've found favorite pieces and treasures in second-hand stores across the USA, in London and Australia, and on holiday in Italy, Singapore and Bali.
The Woman in the Silver Frame
I keep a photo of a woman on my desk. In the black and white photo, she is dressed in clothes from the turn of the 20th century, a sheer black blouse over a white muslin top. The silver frame has never tarnished, even after 12 years in Bali's tropical humidity. The woman was my great-grandmother. She died long before I was born, long before my mother had even met my father. I have never spoken to her, or seen her living face, but she has shaped my habits.
