Little Black Notebook
Chrissie closed the back end of her SUV and carried the last box to her quaint, renovated farmhouse. Her friend Henry had just thrown her a retirement party at his posh clubhouse in the subdivision he lived in. Technically, she had taken an early retirement without pay some ten plus years ago. Therefore, she was surprised at the turnout of friends and former colleagues at the party. But then again, Henry's parties always drew a crowd, plus he was a retired district employee as well, so that helped.

MY HOME TOWN
I could not have asked for a better hometown to grow up in than A-Town, or better known as Aurora, Colorado. A-town is a suburb located north and south of Denver. In the late 1960's it was ripe with promise in the form of new businesses and subdivisions such as the one my parents chose to live in shortly before I was born. Our yard backed up to an empty field with a beautiful view of the mountains.

A Fresh Start
What do the words fresh start mean to you? That is an easy question for me. A fresh start is new footprints after a snowstorm, the smell of the air after a long rain, the crunch of leaves in a freshly raked leaf pile, the smell of a newly constructed house, or, finally, my favorite of all, the bright colors of brand new school supplies.

A NIGHT OWL
Good evening. My name is Barnabus. I am a barn owl. Yes, a barn owl named Barnabus. I didn't make the rules. Mine is a simple country life in a rural area in Texas. I live alone in my very own loft of a run down red barn vacated by farm animals long ago. I live off a road named Snowy Owl Lane, which is quite humorous since we live in Texas and there are no Snowy Owls in these parts. I have plenty of company should I want it both day and night. But the most interesting things happen at night. This is perfect since I happen to be nocturnal. Let me show you a glimpse into the life of a wise, old barn owl and the cast of characters on Snowy Owl Lane.

Dear Me in 2021
Dear Self, Version 2021 Even before this challenge came across your in-box, you have been working on You since the beginning of December. After years of putting others' needs first, you had finally had enough. You had finally hit rock bottom. The epiphany hit like a tidal wave in the form of a lifelong friend's surprise visit. This friend knocked on your door and you froze. You looked around your house trying to see it from another's perspective having long since stopped seeing the faults yourself. Laundry, dishes, clutter all uncharacteristically left neglected. This wasn't you! As you finally answered the door still in your pajamas at 11:00 a.m, you hugged them and made some flimsy excuses. They looked at you with kind, nonjudgmental eyes and suggested that you get dressed, get out of the house, and that the two of us go for a drive on this beautifully sunny day. We drove to a convenience store to pick up picnic items and drinks and set off for a park.

GIFT GIVING GUIDE 2020
This year, more than ever before, we need random acts of kindness. Therefore, it seems apropos to dedicate the holiday gift idea guide to companies who pay it forward with the purchases you make. In any given year there are so many charities to choose from that need our help. But this year, the pandemic has created a whole new level of need with people out of jobs, businesses closing, and families of those who fell victim to this evil virus facing catastrophic hospital bills. It is hard to find someone whose inner circle didn't suffer in some way from Corona virus.

Holiday Card 2020
Happy Holidays! Welcome to the Brasher holiday card! Forget about Santas and trees, snowmen and elves, lights and ornaments. 2020 deserves none of the usual holiday cheer. Let us face it, Corona has been a game changer. Who wants to send out Christmas cards when they will probably be delivered late anyway? Why should we decorate when we will not be having any company? Same goes for wrapping presents. Who besides immediate family will be around to unwrap them? 2020 was full of poop and so is my holiday card this year. It will not matter if it delivered late since all it acknowledges is the new year!

A Thankful Sister
What am I most thankful for this holiday season? My brother! Many of you have been following the stories of the devastating fires across the United States. Two fires in particular hit very close to home for me. In my home state of Colorado, the Cameron Peak Fire and the East Troublesome fire raged simultaneously creating a very devastating threat to the tourist town of Estes Park, where my brother and his beautiful family live. While we watched the Cameron Peak fire closely, it was a much more deadly fire that was just on the horizon. The East Troublesome fire swooped in fast causing my family to have to evacuate quickly. Soon after, it was threatening their very neighborhood with emergency crews camped one block over!

Home Alone Pets
"Mommie, Mommie where are you going"? Whether it be work, shopping, or going out on a date or with friends for entertainment, the guilt is enormous for true fur baby owners when they leave their babies at home alone. What are they thinking? What are they doing? Do they have enough food? Water? Are they warm enough? Cool enough? Are they feeling neglected and scared I won' t come home, or loved and can't wait for me to come home. Those eyes! How do I leave those eyes? She/he seems off today. Is she/he sick? Should I stay home? The insecurities are endless, as I am sure they are for parents of humans.
