Our Lungs
In this day and age, we are all a lot smarter than we were ten years ago. We know that cigarettes will eventually kill us. Now I expect that there will be people who read this and say that I do not understand because I do not smoke, but I used to. Now this will probably surprise people who know me, but I did. I smoked on and off in college. It was not an everyday thing, only when we would go out. I am from that era where you could smoke on an airplane, and so I did. I worked for many years as a flight attendant, and many of my friends smoked. I worked back when you could smoke on domestic flights. I mean, just imagine being trapped in an airplane with the last eight, nine, sometimes ten rows all smoking. As it is, you do not have good circulated air on an airplane, and then let us add smoking to it.

Crossing a Line Top Story - October 2017
Recently I was shown an article about a famous singer who was at a benefit concert. He was singing to a large crowd of mostly women. Yes there were men there too, but there was a huge crowd of women that were very close to the stage. As the singer often does when he performs he got very close to the edge of the stage. Many of the people there had their hands raised up in the hope that he might touch them. He also often takes flowers from them and other gifts. On this particular night like he often does he knelt down, and just as he did one woman grabbed his private part. Now this was not a brush of her hand, it was a grab. He quickly grabbed her hand and removed it. Because he was in the middle of his song he had to continue singing.

Our Tennessee Trip
We decided to take our first a trip to Tennessee. It was during the eclipse, and since they said that Nashville was one the best places to see it we thought why not go? We had planned the trip about three weeks in advance. Every hotel in Nashville was pretty much booked up, and if it wasn't they wanted a ridiculous price for a room. We decided to stay close to Nashville, since we were there to see the eclipse. We can get there by car, so it was not that bad of a drive. Well until we got closer to Tennessee, apparently a lot of people were doing the same that we were, so the traffic was just awful. Whenever the traffic gets like that we just stop and get something to eat. We stopped at our usual place, Cracker Barrel. Now if you have never been there you should go just for their store alone. The one thing is that you probably won't leave there without buying something. This time we ate breakfast food, but we usually get their chicken and dumplings. Their Coca-Cola chocolate cake is really good too. Yes that is what I said, Coca-Cola. It makes the chocolate cake really moist, almost like you are eating fudge. After we left we headed to our hotel to check in, we had planned on getting up early, because we knew that traffic would be just as bad. The day of the eclipse we had everything planned out, or so we thought, until we found out that they were closing off the park for their employees. We decided instead of risking us missing the real reason we had traveled to Tennessee that we were just going to find somewhere to pull off the road before it started.

Travel Before September 11th
September 11th is not an easy topic to talk about. When it comes to traveling, especially on an airplane, so much has changed since that day. It is completely necessary. Yet things still need to improve even more for our safety. When I first started traveling, and let's not get into specifics, I'm old, things were completely different than they are today. You did not have to schedule your arrival to the airport terminal, so that you could plan for long lines at security. You did not have to worry about the long lines just to check in your luggage. You could pull up to the terminal with your car, and someone was there trying to take your luggage from you whether you wanted them to or not. Many times I would have to say, no I don't need your help. I'm going to take my own luggage in. I was young, and did not have the extra cash to pay these guys a tip for helping me with my luggage.

Special Education in 2017
Today's education for students who have disabilities still has not improved enough to truly help them. Supposedly there are laws in place, but just try to challenge something that is wrong and see if they help you. They don't. All students who have disabilities have a right to privacy. No student should ever be forced into a situation where they are made to feel uncomfortable. How would you feel if your doctor told everyone that you have a disease? Students who have disabilities have advisors that are assigned to help them. The problem is that these advisors really have no authority to correct something if anything goes wrong. There is always a boss of a boss that is higher up than they are, so where does it end when students run into problems with a class? What should be solved in a few days turns into weeks of waiting. When this happens it adversely affects the students who are having problems.

Air Travel Today
As a former flight attendant, believe me when I tell you that I have seen it all when it comes to traveling on a plane. It is as if people become someone that you do not recognize. It is understandable when we are required to release ourselves to a total stranger. These planes take us from A to B, and we have no idea who is flying them. I can assure you that these people are highly qualified. It takes long hours of flight and classroom training before you can fly a commercial airplane. Most pilots are former military, and have plenty of experience flying. Your flight attendants have a lot of training as well. You should put down your book, magazine, whatever you might be doing, stop talking, and listen to what they are saying. If not for yourself at least out of respect for the people that are sitting near you. They are not doing that safety demonstration for themselves. They already know everything that there is to know about that. Remember if anything goes wrong these are the people who are going to help you. They know those planes, you don't, so you are going to need them.

Pets We Loved and Lost
Anyone who has a pet understands the unconditional love that they give to us. They are always there for us whenever we need them. When they die, we cannot understand why they had to go away. Whether it was because of old age, a sickness, or another reason, we are devastated. Recently our dog died, but not in a way that you might ever imagine. My daughter and I had gone away for a short vacation. We had done this so many times before, so why would I think that anything was different this time? Whenever I was leaving for more than a few days, I would tell Popcorn, "Don't be sad, we'll be back soon. If you miss me just visit me in my dreams." I remember the day that we left. He was sitting on the dining room floor staring at me as if to say, "Please don't leave me here. Take me with you." I can still see his face. Whenever I think about that day I wish that we had never gone away. Just two days before we were supposed to come back, I got the worst news ever. At first I thought it was a twisted sick joke. It wasn't. Popcorn was dead. I frantically called his veterinarian, but of course nobody answered because it was a Sunday. I left a message hoping that he would call me back. Popcorn had been taken to his doctor by my daughter's dad. He was there to get antibiotics for his skin problems. Instead, her dad told the doctor to put him to sleep. Yes, that is what I said, Popcorn had been euthanized. My daughter was just as heart broken as I was when she found out. We just could not understand why the doctor would have listened to him and put Popcorn to sleep. Popcorn was my dog, not his. He had maybe seen this doctor twice, if that even, because one time was to pick him up from the groomer. To my knowledge he had not even talked to the doctor that day. There was nothing that I could do now. Popcorn was gone forever. I filed a complaint with our state veterinary office. They said the doctor had the right to put him to sleep because he was told to. This person who handles the reviews also told me that there has to be an established relationship. Established means a long term relationship. There was no long term relationship when you have only interacted with the person twice. The state veterinary office did nothing. Then he had the nerve to send me a link about a case where a family asked for pain and suffering for their loss. I did not ask for that. There is no amount of money that could ever make what happened to Popcorn okay! Here is the link to the article that they sent to me:
