The Rocking Life
The DJ A tribute to KCLB DJ “TK” I remember my first radio and the stations that I used to listen to on the AM band. My favorite station was a station called KLOS in Los Angeles. I was only 14 at the time but it was a magical time of rock music with bands that would transform rock and roll music forever. Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Queen, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Jethro Tull, the Allman Brother’s band, the Ramones, The Clash, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater, ZZ Top, Yes, KISS, Rush (my personal favorite in this era), Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Journey, Thin Lizzy, King Crimson, The Kinks, Styx, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, The Moody Blues, Bad Company, Electric Light Orchestra, Steve Miller Band, T. Rex, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, Steely Dan, Mott the Hoople, The Talking Heads, The Byrds, Boston, Cheap Trick, and many other bands and one hit wonders that went by the wayside.

The Rocking Life
1970's: Sucking it all in I barely remember the early 1970's. I was only a young child back then. I grew up in a modest home, a son to a Dutch immigrant who was my father and a Puerto Rican transplant who was my mother. Both were hardworking and provided well for our family. My father worked as a cashier for a convenience store that his family-owned and my mother worked as a seamstress. As the saying goes, we didn't have much but we had all we needed.

The Rockin' Life
The Prophetess The place was the Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, California. The time was exactly 9:27 p.m. It was another glorious evening on the Strip, a place that I called home. It was a balmy July evening and the scene at the Whisky and it couldn't have been better. I spent twenty minutes smoking a few cigarettes and looking at the colorful lights of the city race by me at slow speeds. Every dude and chick in a car was taken in the sites with glee as I was.

Legendary Poetry
Battling the enemy Just take the pain they tell me. Who are "they" to tell me that? Who that fuck do they say that they are to tell me such a thing? They tell me that they have been there before and that they know exactly what I'm feeling. Oh really? Have you gone nights without sleep because you were in such pain that you weren't able to sleep. Have you cried out in pain and have nobody listen to you? Oh sure, it's easy for you to say that it will pass as you sit there on your high horse with no cares in the world while I wither and die from my excruciating pain.

The Journey: A story about life Sometimes the journey starts with anguish. Sometimes with trepidation. Both were true as for me this time as I stood before the perilous trail before me. A sense of fear enveloped me as I considered the monumental task before me. Looking at the spectacular mountain ahead of me, I took in a deep breath and wondered if I had the courage to proceed. I had completed missions similar to this I reasoned. I will conquer this one, as well. Yet I had never faced a challenge so great as the one before me now.

Legendary Poetry
Epiphany I stood alone in the darkness only yards from my destination, hopelessy incapacitated, legs shaking, body trembling, and heart beating hard. The torturous pain was nearly unbearable as I cried out with tears in my ears. As I stood there wavering like a drunken man I wondered to myself, "What had happened to me? How had I come to this position life?"

Part 2 Sometimes I talk to people who have mental illness and they tell me that they don't take medication because they don't want to have to deal with the side effects of the medicine. I always tell these people that the side effects of taking their medicine is far less then the side effect of winding up stuck in a Mental Health Unit for several days.
