I didn’t hear the end of the world. I saw it though. Swirling masses of colour shifting across the screen of my ipad. Hurricanes first. Lots, and lots of hurricanes. It was the worst year for hurricanes on record. Then we had earthquakes, I felt them vibrating the house. Tsunamis followed by a few volcanic eruptions and a sudden drop in temperature. All in a perfect little span of less than a month. An apocalypse professionally gift wrapped, bow and all.

A Guinea Pig
Lina stood on the train platform feeling anxious and exposed. Alone despite all the people waiting on the same platform. She hated shopping and she hated taking the train but today, both had been required. With her ticket tucked in her purse and bags clutched at her side she waited for her train to glide up to the platform.

Chocolate, I Love You
Maggie bent over to peer into the refrigerator. The most perfect chocolate cake looked back at her, sitting on the middle shelf by itself. Thick white icing, dark chocolate shavings pressed against the sides and cherries nestled in swirls of whipped cream along the top. She hadn’t taken any short cuts and now her mouth watered at the mere sight of it. She had used her favourite recipe; the one where the chocolate is melted, and hot water is added to the batter. It made the cake extra moist. Maggie had made it for her sister’s birthday, but Jana was working late and would not be home for at least a couple more hours.

Man Up
I had every intention of telling my girlfriend. For months I had convinced myself I would tell her, I just needed to wait for the perfect moment. It was the day after Canada Day, normally people would be shooting off left over fireworks, but the entire week had been plagued by unnatural thunderstorms. Avoiding my reflection in the mirror, I whispered, “I’ll tell her tonight. Like right now.”

Best NZ (or AUS) Dessert
Back in 2015 I travelled New Zealand for eight months. I spent most of the trip WWOOFing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) around the North Island. Of all the farms I visited, my favourite had the perfect view of Mt Taranaki and was primarily off the grid. The family was incredibly welcoming. I spent my morning helping feed the animals (mostly guinea pigs being raised as pets but also chickens and ducks), checking cows and sheep, and weeding the garden that was designed using principles of permaculture.

Canada Day
Aaniin, ndizhnikaaz Kelsey. Hello, I am called Kelsey. I’m currently living in Ontario which includes land under 46 treaties and other agreements including land purchases made by the Crown signed between 1781 and 1930. Treaties are legally binding agreements between First Nations and federal and provincial governments. There are many different groups that consider parts of Ontario as their traditional territory, including but not limited to: Anishnaabeg, Haudensaunee, Attawandaraon, Ojibway/Chippewa, Huron-Wendat, and Cree. I am grateful to be able to live and work on this land which includes much of Southern Ontario and other provinces in Canada.

A World of Ghosts
Patrick didn’t feel sad when his mother died. Instead, he felt numb as the coroners came to take her body away. They interviewed her ghost. She had died of natural causes in her sleep. Heart failure, sudden and unexpected. It would have been impossible for him to have gotten her to the Death Houses. That was where all the nearly-dead-but-not-yet-dead went to remain in cryosleep rather than becoming ghosts forever haunting a person, place or thing.

The Asylum
During the month of June in 2020, five employees of an environmental consulting company arrived in [REDACTED] to complete a series of bat surveys on a property with numerous condemned buildings. Bat surveys are conducted 30 minutes prior to sunset and one hour after for a total survey time of 90 minutes. According to the protocols for species at risk bats by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, suitable weather means low wind, no precipitation, and temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius. In 1876 the site was called the [REDACTED] Asylum for Idiots. The following logs a series of unusual phenomena that each employee experienced and later recounted to their fellow coworkers.

Writing Prompts
Writing prompts are much like the challenges Vocal Media provides. A little spark of an idea meant to get your mind turning. Hopefully, at minimum, a new article or short story comes out of it. Some are sentences, some are ideas, some start with a photo. I’ve been in charge of creating writing prompts for the Vocal Creators Saloon Facebook group since it first started. Most of these prompts have appeared in that group. Some have been found on other writing prompt websites or posted by other writers in Facebook groups. Hope you enjoy and happy writing! Creativity knows no limits.
