It had been about two months since I met and started teaching Samuel how to read. I was impressed by how quickly he picked things up, though it was surprising that no one in his old community wanted to teach him this stuff. History is the one thing we can learn from, thus a necessary thing to remember. But maybe it was that they did not see the reason to since so much of the population had been wiped out. Maybe they had lost hope for the future of humans, and learning to read and write was the last thing on their minds.

Ugh, how long again have I been walking through the remains of this destroyed city? It has been a year since I last saw anyone, so I doubt I will find anyone here. But since the world ended before I was born, I often dreamed of the communities my father used to tell me about. It was just the two of us for so long, that I did not even know that there were other people out there. When he finally passed last year, he told me to get out of the town we lived in and see the world. Now, here I was, traveling all over this landmass he said used to be called North America.

This is Us
I made my way down the aisle to a man I did not love, that I probably never would love and thought back over the past six months. This arrangement had been made to help my father further his business contacts. While it was my good fortune that the man, I was marrying was good-looking, we really did not know each other. His smile was friendly as I approached, surrounded by friends, family, and the media. Since both of us were busy with our own things, we had barely talked, much less spent anytime together to prepare for our wedding.

Elevated
It started on that elevator. That was the day I opened up to Alina and told her the truth about what I thought of her. I was pleasantly surprised when she accepted my request to go on a date two months later, and now, I could not be happier than I am now. It had been four months since that first date and last night, I asked her if we could be exclusive. She had agreed and now, a new romance has been gained. Sure, I had been mean to her, to the point of making a complete jerk of myself, but she was willing to forgive me for that.

Stopped
It had been two months since his apology and things had legitimately improved, much to my surprise. William was no longer rude to me and the only time we had argued was over the specifics of a client project we were working on. His new, friendly demeanor did not go unnoticed by our coworkers, either. What a surprise it was that we could work together and not fight. I smiled slightly at this, feeling better than ever about my personal and work life. Stepping into that same elevator, I came face to face with William again. I smiled slightly up at him before stepping forward.

Elevator
Why did this have to happen today of all days? I already have an unreasonable fear of elevators, but today, I just so happened to climb on with my annoying coworker. I looked out of the window in the back of the elevator and tried to ignore my coworker who was currently glaring at me as though the entire situation were my fault. I wanted to curl up into a ball and hide because I hated the elevator, but I did not want to show that weakness in front of him. He already thought very little of me. Sighing, I watched as the cars passed by on the road outside.

Another Year Older
I was not the type of person to stand on ceremony. Though I knew this, as I looked at the clock right when midnight hit, I wished that my birthday this year could be special. Unfortunately, I did not have anyone to have those special moments with, so all I could expect was it to be just another day. I frowned slightly as my thoughts darkened from there before turning my gaze back up to my white ceiling. Happy birthday to me. Another year older and a lot more stress. I fell asleep just like that, staring up at the ceiling wishing my life was a little bit better than it was.

Red
“So, all you have to do is wear the bracelet until the day we activate it. When we do activate it, you will automatically be pulled to your soulmate.” The man stated as he attached the blinking red bracelet to my wrist. “It’s magnetic, so it will attach to their bracelet when it is activated. To separate them, they will press the button on yours and you will press the one on theirs.”

Sunset
I tore my eyes away from the beautiful view before me. The shining sun as it set on the ocean, the lovely waves as they lapped at the shore. Even though it truly was a dazzling sight, my heart was not in it. I looked to my left out of the corner of my eye and saw my best friend with his newest girlfriend. My head definitely was not in the view. Brad had been my best friend for years, always there when I needed him, even if his girlfriends hated it. But I had never felt like he was just a friend.
