cardigans, ghosts, ashes, and bloodstains: let's talk about folklore
Every time Taylor Swift comes out with a new album I write a post about it. I usually do this on my personal blog that really functions as more of a journal for me, so that is where I have reviews/analyses of each album going back to 1989, which was around the time I first started blogging. This post was actually one that I wrote back in September, so quite soon after Folklore came out, and long before Evermore blew the rest of our brains apart. (As of right now, I haven't written one about Evermore. But when I do I will probably share it here on Vocal as well. I mean, if you guys want to read it.) It was so much fun writing this post and sharing everything this album meant and still means to me, so I wanted to share it here as well.

I Rise
The world has whispered many things in the places we call home. Sometimes it tells you glittery lies and others dark truths. It whispers of excitement and exhilaration in deep kisses and strong drinks. It lures you under starry skies and into cold water. It tempts you to regret the black corners when you walked without a light. It lurks you into fog where you cannot see the sun.

The Space Between Suns
I am afraid of the dark. Charles didn’t know that until our first night together, when the passion cooled into the warmth of a moment I couldn’t bear to break with words. He slid away for only a moment, probably to get us a drink, but the sudden emptiness by my side as I was enveloped in the darkness was more than I could pretend to face.

There were several different kinds of clothing I had never attempted to sew before. I was used to designing my own clothing: from day dresses to evening wear to coats and even nightgowns. I had sketchbooks full of other things: men’s suits, hats of every kind, shoes, and even children’s clothing. When thinking about my future, I had always pictured myself in Paris. I would start with a small shop of my own with a few dresses or coats in the window. And perhaps one day my designs would find their way onto bigger stages or into the hands of people who were proud of their names.

The Space Between Suns
In the end, they had arrested my father on a technicality. It didn’t matter that everybody knew what he had really done. They’d never catch him for those things. There wasn’t enough evidence. There wasn’t any evidence. So, I watched headlines swim before my eyes as the days wore on.

For several weeks after that, we heard of raids on various speakeasies around town. None of them were Chas’s, but each raid was worse than the last. It began to frighten me. In spite of all Chas did to reassure me, and all the confidence I did have in him, I knew all too well how shadows slipped through your hands. He wasn’t in the kind of business that you could keep a grip on. You always had to be ready for anything.

The Space Between Suns
Boston 1924 It was the time when we surrendered our lives to the night. When darkness fell over Boston the real world opened her wide, dark eyes and smiled. And she came to mingle with us in overlooked speakeasies full of glitter and gray smoke.

The Truth About Broken Things
The Fullston’s lived at No. 9 Chaddick Drive, just around the corner from the recruiting office. In the days following the bold black headlines of the Lusitania lines of men extended well past the front door. Their eyes all held different stories. Frightened or yearning for glory, and always perched above gray coats.

Soup of Fate
Listen, I’m not saying that asking the mob for favors is a good idea. Before I really get into my story, I want to make that clear. It’s important to me that you know that since I doubt you’ll believe that stance from this point forward. It’s also important to note, right from the get-go, that I did not get into this situation intentionally. If anything, it was thrust upon me.
