I enjoy running, and I once ran a marathon. Yes, just once! A friend and I trained for the run months in advance, following a recommended training schedule that “guaranteed” success. The morning of the race, I felt energized and confident. My shoes were double knotted, the iPod was fully charged, and I had two energy gel packs. I was ready.

Stray Dog to the Rescue
I am not a dog person — at least that is what I told myself for 40 years. Growing up, I shared my house with cats. They slept on my bed and kept me company while I was doing homework. When I moved out on my own, one of the first items I got for the new apartment was a cat!

The Army Helped Me Harness the Power of Mindfulness
I received my first lesson on mindfulness in 1997 while lying in a field waiting for the Army to rescue me. I was a young captain attending the Officer Basic Course (OBC) at Fort Sam Houston, TX. Despite my rank, I knew little about being a soldier. This course was my first exposure to the “real” Army, and part of the experience was a two-week field training exercise (FTX).
