When my son was around four, we did our first Whole30. If you are not familiar, a basic description of the program is that it is designed to change your relationship with food, for the health benefits and the emotional ones. For thirty days, you eat nothing but real, whole food and eliminate the ones that are processed and known gut disrupters. The program forces you to recognize the importance of food, especially its quality, and acknowledge the habits we form around consuming it.

Dear Teachers
All of you deserve more than mere acknowledgment. We send our kids to you for six hours a day. We entrust you to teach them the stuff beyond counting to 10 and identifying the colors of the crayon box. The more angelic of you are even required to instruct on the lower level stuff, like potty-training and not eating the Lego.

Peace Within the Noise
Resolutions are funny things. We make them address a behavior we would like to change, modify, or even adapt in our daily lives. They begin on shaky ground; our resistance and lack of motivation have had quite the head start. Stick-to-itiveness is inherently tough on them. Similar to the religious observation of Lent, we are asking those resolutions to do something in opposition to the behavior we love. Their ultimate goal is to disrupt behavior we have, at least, found passively comfortable.
