My Relationship with Video Games: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
I've been playing games all my life. I can't tell you how old I was when I first picked up a video game but I can tell you what the game was and the circumstances around it as if it happened yesterday. I was still living in the Philippines at the time and my uncle gave me his Game Boy—the first one which, as some of you may recall, was the big grey brick that needed a fistful of AA batteries to run. The first game I ever played on it? Mortal Kombat. I don't know if that was a good choice on my uncle's part, but luckily the Game Boy wasn't conducive to ultra-violence, if only because it was graphically incapable of rendering it. With a dot matrix display that started to fade when the batteries were running low, the thing could only do so much. But it did enough. It got me hooked.

The White Lady: An International Phenomenon
You know what one of my favorite stories from the Philippines was? The story of the White Lady. As a kid, I was told the story by my father who said he encountered her on the drive back to our farm in Batangas. As I grew older, I learned that he wasn't the only one. A lot of people from all over the Philippines claim to have seen the White Lady. The stories of who she is and how she came to be vary slightly, as do the accounts of her sightings. The story from my father absolutely chilled me as a child and I wanted to share it.

What makes them so impressive? For one, there's the sheer amount of craftsmanship and hours spent bringing something from a fictional world into ours.

Los Angeles Comic Con Didn't Live Up To Hype Because It Had None
Blizzcon is well underway so a lot of people might have already forgotten that there was a convention in Los Angeles last week. Stan Lee's Los Angeles Comic Con (formerly Comikaze) took over the South Hall of the Los Angeles convention center with the promises of a good time for all. I was lucky enough to attend last year and had a great time so I had high hopes. However, as the convention drew closer, there were some warning sighs that, in hindsight I should have picked up on.
