BOOK 0: FIELDS OF FIRE Chapter ix
The Armada’s General Population Quarters were sturdy but also hastily built and offered dull gray walls. The few windows available were on the observation decks, covered by blast shielding for the journey. The engineers tried to improve the lighting but the ships for the most part were dim and depressing, and definitely had an adverse affect on the people. It was hard to be hopeful in a constant shade of fog. They were grateful to have museum artwork to display.

Book 0: FIELDS OF FIRE Chapter x
Gareth just connected the last few wires for the latest monitor he designed when he heard a muffled voice and felt a boot toe poke him in the ribs. He was already bent uncomfortably over into a small claustrophobia-inducing space next to a holding tank on the Freen, with a precarious grip on some wiring. It would be a scramble to pull up and out of the space without undoing his handiwork. He felt the toe in his ribs again, and he flinched. It must be Her Nibs or that idiotic Brent, Gareth thought. Only they were associated enough with him to hail him with a boot and not a word.

Book 0: FIELDS OF FIRE Chapter viii
There was nothing the engineers could do about the Oceanic ship Freen. Ordinarily, a Thuringi ship could travel through the wormholes of space and execute a leap across vast distances in hardly any time at all. Theoretically, the three general population quarter ships could be strengthened to withstand the trip through the wormholes if they could get the proper materials to do so and if they had a few years’ time to reinforce the ships. And if they could be certain the Shargassi would not attack again during that vulnerable time.

Book 0 FIELDS OF FIRE Chapter iii
The evening found the emergency medical ward a hive of activity. From a central control hub just off the main hanger, surgical arenas fanned out in a circular pattern. Doors beyond then took the patient out of surgery and to the main hospital ward. All civilian medical personnel were brought in for duty.

BOOK 0: FIELDS OF FIRE Chapter iv
Eventually the Shargassi reluctantly concluded there was no Arda liquid to be found on the former Thuringi planet. Several warriors were lost beneath the thick sludge once known as an ocean, in search of it. All but two members of the Shargassi governing body the Elect were military, and the majority demanded the warships hunt down and wrest the powerful material from the fleeing nomads. They knew Thuringi engines and generators and other fabulous inventions were powered with it. Lycasis Phillipi must have stolen away with it all! Ships were dispatched to retrieve any Arda liquid and finish off their escaping enemy.

Book 0: FIELDS OF FIRE Chapter v
Glendon returned to his quarters and paused outside it for a moment to brace before he opened the door. As he figured, his wife Janis was in the front room of their quarters patting her weeping sister in comfort. He entered uneasily. Janis glanced his way briefly and continued to listen as Lia wailed.

BOOK 0: FIELDS OF FIRE Chapter vi
King Lycasis stood in his throne room and gazed at a Nebular globe, crafted by Sengans, fine tuned by the Sturbin and used by all star travelers. Across its black surface prominent stars help locate and trace the movement of ships across the sea of stars. As their location changed, the three-dimensional star field on the globe changed accordingly, the location marked by computerized points for navigators to use. It was a beautiful as well as useful instrument, but his mind was awash in a swirl of thoughts and he did not really see the globe before him.

Book 0 FIELDS OF FIRE: Chapter i
Maranta Shanaugh stepped back from digging up a Dorea tree sapling to wipe the sweat from his brow. He glanced at the dingy skies warily and saw a ship on approach. "Oh no, you will not, you foul vermin," he muttered. "You have done enough damage to this world." It would be just like the Shargassi to choose to bombard this particular forest on this particular knoll at this particular time, the only time Maranta could get away to dig up a tree for posterity on the once grand world of Thuringa. But once he recognized the triangular shape of a small Thuringi cargo ship, he relaxed and dug his shovel into the dirt again.

Book 0 Fields of Fire: Chapter ii
Stuart loaded the vicar’s personal effects into his ship to take the clergyman to the capital city. Maranta and Carrol followed in the cargo ship. Below them the dreadful damage of the Shargassi onslaught advanced with alarming increase. Thuringa's once productive bran fields were brown and brittle. Carrol wondered if it was her imagination that the very landscape appeared to die before her eyes, from the horizon behind her in a slow but steady march forward toward Arne. She drew close to Maranta and held the upper part of his arm as if to protect him from the encroaching threat. He glanced at her lovingly and returned his attention to piloting the ship.
