Why 'Netflix for Books' Will Never WorkTop Story - June 2022
Publishing is filled with pretty smart people. Admittedly, I'm biased about this, because some of them publish my books. But I'd say that even if they didn't. When it comes to producing books in a fickle, strange industry, the business is filled with people who know how to get it done.

The Amazon Kindle is Perfect
A week ago, I had to replace my wallet. It was a bittersweet moment for me, because I'd had that wallet for nearly twenty years. I bought it in Italy, in 2004, on the first ever trip I took overseas with my now-wife. I can't even remember what it cost.

Five Book Podcasts I Absolutely Love
Goddamn, but podcasts are a fucking blessing. It's a delight to be able to soundtrack an otherwise boring activity—dishes, a commute, or in my case, morning stretches—with something that makes you laugh, or entertains you, or informs you. And it's especially a delight not to have to rely on the colossal shitshow that is radio right now.

How To Be Interviewed
I used to interview a lot of people. It was sort of my job. Well, if I’m honest, my job as a working journalist was to get from a particular point A to a particular point B. Point A involved me frantically flailing around as I hunted for ideas to pitch to various publications. Point B was taking those ideas and making something that didn’t suck. But interviewing was the road between A and B. As a working journalist, I couldn’t write my stories without interviews.

Mornings Suck
Here's what my morning should look like, as a writer: I wake up at 6:30 after seven to eight hours of restful sleep, starting the day with a cuddle on the bed with my wife and dog. Over coffee, my wife and I discuss news stories we've read, and what we plan to do that evening.

What Brandon Sanderson Does Is Incredible
So I want to talk about Brandon Sanderson for second. Sanderson, if you weren’t aware, is a prolific fantasy author. Last week, he did something pretty extraordinary. He created a Kickstarter for a new series of books, which quickly became the single most funded crowdfunding event on the site, ever. He scored something like $17 million in the first day. (it's now at $34 million. At one point, I was watching the number go up like a freaking stock ticker.)
