Hi, im 18 years old currently in college working towards my bachelors degree in English, inspiring to become an author. :)
Why it’s Okay to be Selfish
Growing up I was always taught to put others before myself. From giving a toy I was using to someone else, to taking care of the house before myself. I always ( and still occasionally do ) feel guilt for saying no to things that I dont want to participate in. I was guilt tripped in my house when I said “no” to a movie or going to the store, when I wanted to do something for myself that day.
Jumble of short stories and poems
Just a quick background; here is a jumble of poems and short stories I have found in my notebook. Some are recently made, while others were made years ago. And at the end, there are some quotes that came from a book I’ve been working on. Enjoy! :)
found my draft from years ago
As I start to go through my computer, which needed some much needed organizion and cleaning, I came across an old book draft from a few years back. Now instead of putting that aside to continue on the task I set out to do, I decide I should share what 16 year old me what writing about.
When you write a story, your character has to have so sort of background. And everything your character does should be motivated by something. Having flimsy character motivations is a quick way for your plot to start seeming contrived and the character choices could start seeming unreasonable. Plus, the psyche is one of the most interesting aspects of a character !
First Loves don’t work out
Fourth grade, music class. Sitting in alphabetical order I look to my right and see the most attractive boy ever. I never payed boys any attention, but fourth grade me found ourselves starstrucked by this boy. Earlier that day my fourth grade teacher told our class that she met her husband in fourth grade. And that they fell in love, but didn’t officially date until college. And at the end of her ‘meeting her husband’ story, she told us that the person we would marry could someone we know right now.
Should You Write a Prologue ?
Writing a Prologue There's a lot of debate over wether prologues should be included in books or not. Plenty of readers skip over them. Personally I always read them because if an author has written a prologue properly, then there's normally little bits of plot info in there. Unfortunately, a lot of authors don't write them properly and make the prologues extremely boring and unnecessary. And plenty of authors use prologues instead of properly worldbuilidng because they seem to think that an “info dump” in a prologue is not an “info dump”. I'm here to tell you that a big info dump in prologue form is still a big info dump. Your readers really don't need to know everything that writers know about their characters and their lives in order to enjoy a book, and a bad prologue will make people not like your book. Trust me. I always read prologues, and if a prologue is really bad, I will put that book down immediately.
