Pieces of Me with Company
I began writing short stories as a writing exercise just over a year ago. It helped me concentrate and work my brain for content. Each short story then was only 300 to 400 words. Each day I challenged myself I could write another 30-50 words. Eventually I was up to 900-1000 words and after editing I had about 800 to 900 words. This was good and I knew I had to push harder. The words began to spill unto the page like children who needed direction as well as nurturing. To push hard without a hug would not be balanced. To hug and not push hard would be not good for the child. Everything must be in balance for it not only to feel right however to be beneficial.

Journal Entry
Well, it is Easter Sunday morning when I was young this was a time of great excitement in our home. Mom would be up cooking breakfast the smell of bacon and eggs would be heavy in the air. She would fuss at us to get ready to go to church. We giggled with excitement as we rushed to put on our new clothes. We had spent the night decorating our Easter baskets with artificial flowers and greenery. The Easter egg hunt after morning service was one of the special events of year. The two of us were ruthless as we elbowed other children to get the eggs. Sometimes mom had to pull us aside and remind us we were pretty little girls not boys and to stop what we were doing.

Taddies in the Lake
The Willis’s disappeared very mysteriously without a trace from the Highland Hills subdivision two years ago. The EPA cleaned up the community and it reopened soon after. Some of the former residents returned many did not. One late afternoon Taddie Willis walked out of the lake as though she had risen from the dead. Just strolled right out of the water with mud, decomposing leaves and other yucky stuff all over her. Her hair had grown a few inches however everything else about her was the same. She was still very masculine and awkward looking. When she was seen walking around the neighborhood in a trance Mrs. Hill noticed her and called the authorities. Once they arrived they attempted to talk to her however no response. She just stood in front of them all dirty and wet staring into space. Mrs. Hill gave a statement to the police that day, “she just walked out of the water like you see people do in the movies. She was all stiff like a zombie!” A few hours later at the hospital, the police had put together that she was indeed Taddie Willis from photos they had of her when they were looking for her family two years prior.

Red Visits Grandma
When she walked down the trail it appears she was not aware of the danger that could await her. Her blazing red hair blew in the wind as though it was singing a song. Just around the bend there was trouble the type you cannot described. A dark time was just ahead of her and she would need all of the strength she had inside to survive.

UAPB or Bust!
I left Kansas City, Missouri early one morning in August of 1973 headed to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff with the promise of a scholarship if I passed an audition, a promise of a $500 book scholarship from a contest that I was in and placed in the top five contestants and maybe $100 that I had earned from working at a construction company as a secretary during the summer. My mom encouraged me to get on the bus and do not fear. My dad proud of me however somewhat hesitant about me leaving home wished me well. He told me you know you can call us at any time. As I turned to say good-bye, I asked, “what happens if I do not make the audition?” Both of my parents said in unison “you will!” It was a 13 hour ride to Pine Bluff on the express bus. It was a warm day and the bus was a bit stuffy. Since it was not crowded I had two seats to myself most of the way. As I stared out the window the landscape slowly changed from the hustle of the city to the tranquil peace of the country side. Many green pastures some with cows and horses and others with a goat or two grazing on the luscious green grass. This was truly an exciting time for me. On my own off to college.

Disappeared
Gone: The Willis Family Disappears The Willis family was a mysterious lot they appeared to be very well off financially however had no manners and were totally self-absorbed. Martha (mom) was very stylish and the way she wore clothing you would think she was a fashion model. Henry (dad) was athletic looking and it was rumored he played football in college. Taddie (girl about 15) was lanky, very awkward and looked very masculine. You could see her chasing after insects, frogs and other creatures trying to catch them all the time. Why, no one seem to know. Shane (boy about 17) was extremely handsome and was out about town on his motorcycle until all times of the night.
