When I Walked Away!
It had been only six months and my marriage was going down the tubes fast. As much as I hated to admit it at the time, I had been played by a man who could be very abusive. The red flags were there and I was just blinded by his charm initiative. Also, I do not do vague well. Some people tried to warn me however they did it in very indirect ways. Now after 21 years working with women primarily in the Islamic community who had been victimized now I know why the warnings came in such an indirect manner. It can be dangerous to come right out and tell a woman in our community “You are in danger.” First in our community there is the burden of proof required by our teachings. A very good thing most of the time however not so good in situations of abuse. Then we have people so afraid that what they say could do damage to the community they go just a bit too far to the right when it comes to married women being in potential danger. Also, most women who think they have found a suitable mate many times just do not want to hear it.

The Naked Man
As I rode on the bus up Woodward Avenue one sunny Sunday morning away from the center of town, I saw a man naked standing in front of a very old hotel. He looked alarmed and since it was very cold outside, I guess he was not comfortable. I wondered what happened? Did he get caught in a woman’s bed by her husband or boyfriend? Was he robbed? Later after I returned to my hosts home, I asked about the area I saw him in and was told the hotel he was standing in front of was an historical landmark. In its time back in the late 30s it was a grand place to live. Many of the popular jazz musicians and other performers stayed in this hotel. The Fox Theater was only a few minutes away by bus or car. However, over time the neighborhood had changed a lot for the worse. The place now was what some called a flop house.

Action of OneRunner-Up in We Have a Dream Challenge
I left an organization I help co-found 20 years ago in 2018. Although I was leaving, and it felt a bit strange it was time for me to go. I felt I had done all I could do, and it was time for someone younger to step up. Plus, I wanted to work on writing and publishing and they both take time. Since I did not enter writing as someone who always wanted to write I needed to first improve my writing skills. This has taken time and lots and lots of practice.

Strange Mini Dreams
I had a bizarre mini dream last week; I saw my aunt Willa dressed in a green two-piece suit with fur around the collar and a hat with fur trim. My aunt was always a smart and stylish dressing woman. She looked like she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and married well. The truth is quite the opposite she was born poor her mom worked as a maid sometimes her father worked on the railroad some and did some construction work. Now about marrying she did do well (for a poor woman) her husband was retired from the military. He was a high-ranking sergeant, so his check was above average. The way she spoke you would have thought she was very highly educated. She was like many poor black women of her day. She dropped out of school about the six grade and went to work to help her family. She passed in 1996 at the age of 82.

Out of the Game
My first day of retirement from the agency I slept almost 24 hours. My daughter was concerned about me. She had just returned home with her two children because of a very nasty and expensive divorce. She woke me up and insisted I go to the emergency room. I go to appease her and the children now ages 11 and 14. The doctors gave me a clean bill of health and set up my appointment with a primary care physician at the clinic for disabled and retired federal agents.

The Beguiling Modern Woman
Her hair was very short with a slight curl and deep, dark brown with red highlights. The hair style made her look very youthful. Emerald green eyes shaped like marbles. High cheek bones and natural dark peach color lips. Her body was strong athletic with a slight bulge in her arm muscles. She usually wore slacks that fit just right and not too provocative. Her breast medium size just enough to notice however not too much to take away from her face.

The Pain in Birthing a Book
It's raining hard the pounding of the water on the ground is like drums beating. My bills are piling up and my newest work is selling very erratically. In my mind all the doubts I have about attempting to write professionally and self-publish are coming back to haunt me like restless spirits. Everyday my ranking slips lower and lower. Then one day a few books sell, and the ranking jumps up a few notches. Yet to only the next day begin a free fall into the abyss. My stomach rumbles as I try to promote my book to more and more people online. A few ask a question or two. However, most just ignore my attempts to reach out to them.

Honing My Craft
It has been six months since I joined an online platform for creatives and my writing life has changed so much for the better. Now I wake up ready to face the screen and begin to write. Some days I am challenged however never frightened and I always manage to put something on the page. This is my new and I pray daily high for the rest of my life. Since I started with the online platform, I have had two stories rejected. I must admit after I read them after the rejection, I saw all the flaws and I was just horrified that I submitted them. How could I think that mess would pass a review? Well, instead of quitting and sulking I started the rewrite of the stories and polished them up. It took two of my writing sessions (about two hours each in length) for me to see where I had gone off course with one of my stories and one writing session (again about two hours in length) for the other. After I course corrected, I resubmitted them and they both were accepted. I learned you cannot rush or lose your focus when you write a short story.
