Gregory Dolan Dies
Bio
I’ve been around the block a time or two but due to a bad left hip I never get far, I just keep walking in circles. I’m an old rusty merry-go-round that will leave you cut and in stitches.

Alone
Firsts. Alone Flying to Spokane, Washington on my way to Eastern Washington University I had several things parading through my alleged mind. First and foremost I didn’t know a soul and I’d never been up this far north. My parents had gone to a thing called Marriage Encounter at EWU and liked the area, so they strongly suggested I make my way up there, and of course I did.

Movies
Firsts: Movies We all have a few movies that bring out tears, you know they’re coming, but you watch it anyway, it’s a healthy cry, it sweeps the cob webs from your soul, it’s memories of moments long ago, of what we considered better days. Not knowing the future, our references are slim, devoid of what we haven’t or can’t see.

Tarmac Blues
Tarmac Blues So after being scheduled and cancelled due to the ‘Covid’ twice, I finally am heading down to Orange County to see my children and grandchildren, I think. My buddy Tim Ure deposited me at the Spokane Airport by 8:00 AM for my flight to Seattle that boarded at 9:20, no worries. The weather however had others ideas, evil, dark ideas, and I had the opportunity to get off this flying twin engine coffin more than once. We were flying a puddle jumper to Seattle, honestly I don’t know if it would jump a small puddle.

Sink of Pee
Firsts: Sink of Pee Sometimes I just feel jinxed. Some people leave a wide swath of destruction down there path, but me, I do freaks of nature. In 1969 in West Texas I was there for a semi mild tornado, in 1980 I was in Cheney, Washington for Mt. St. Helens and our first year in Northern Idaho, Cindy and I witnessed the worst winter in fifty years.

The End in Sight
End in Sight So the last night in the OC I spent at my youngest daughter Kelly’s house, another night, another bed, all four kids and both grandkids were there for dinner, it was a hoot. I’ve made my peace with moving from my home of six decades and albeit difficult, I will visit again soon. My eldest Katey booked me first class on the way home, front of the plane, a place I’ve passed through numerous times but never been invited to stay. I’m feeling a bit snooty about the entire ordeal, I’ll probably scoff a bit at those in the coach sections, peasants.

Summer School
Summer School My first week of summer after my sophomore year at Mater Dei turned into five days I’ll never, though try as I might, forget. About two weeks before the end of the school year, the old man gave me my reprieve, he was going to let me leave the rigors of Catholic School life and go public, it was a gentleman’s agreement, sans the handshake.

The Formality of Dance
The Formality of a Dance I’ve got to believe women invented dancing, men don’t have that kind of freedom in themselves, and formal dances like Homecoming and Proms couldn’t of come out of the mind of a guy. The fear I had was almost to much to handle, sure I was interested in females, but generally from a distance. And it started early for me, I got invited to a Homecoming my freshman year and how does a guy say no to a girl, unless of course it’s your sister, and she doesn’t really count.

Born to be Different
Born to be Different I was born lost and enjoy the exploration of life, and honestly don’t like being found. I like every day to be different, to learn from scores of different people, their thoughts, hopes and dreams, those I tend to borrow and keep them tucked away in the dusty recesses in my brain. They have seen and lived acutely opposite of me, they know where they’re going, and know the roads to get there, sans a map.

Being Me
Being Me My mind was a kaleidoscope of the absurd, brilliantly colored, opulent, but with no intent. My plate was always worth more than my meal, for my ideas were dreams without a pillow to lay my head, I was a ship with no port in which to moor. I hustled a flurry of nothingness, flight without wings, the sky and the earth upside down, inside out, reversed as you know them.

From Worst to First
it was June 4th 1975 and I had two tickets to the Bachman Turner Overdrive concert at the Hollywood Amphitheater, but alas, no date. My roommate Tim and his girlfriend Gail suggested I ask Gails’ friend Cindy, who was way out of my league, but desperate times call for, well you know, desperate measures. Cindy was a looker, picture an even prettier Natalie Wood, and I had sweaty palms as I dialed her digits. She answered promptly and after swallowing my tongue a few times I finally found my voice and blurted out the invitation and she readily accepted,

LuLu Arrives

She hadn’t been bathed or groomed in years and had been living under a porch for going on five years. She’s a sensitive gal, eighty pounds of sensitive. When her owners brought her over we weren’t looking for a dog this big, this dirty and this ungroomed, but destiny strikes at odd times and you take advantage of it.
