Dear Santa, Yeah, I’m like 30 years too old to probably have this letter approved, but, seriously, I broke my laptop’s keyboard last year and still haven’t gotten it fixed (Ok, Ok, sure, I got a new keyboard to plug in, but underneath that neon-lit keyboard is a keyboard that still can’t type the letter “m”).

The letter came in an envelope more fit for a theater than the shit heap storage rental property it came from. Jason had just been fired from his fifth job this year when it showed up. He had applied to well over seventy-two jobs and been on at least half as many job interviews. He had a lot of good handshakes, half promises and the one or two interviews that led to something fell apart before turning into anything good. But this big fancy letter showed up and Jason just knew it was going to change his life.

The Frozen Pond
It was the Dog Days of August when the creeks all dried up. What water was left went sour and the little pond up at Joe Parker's farm - the farm nearest mine and Nelly's childhood home - had gone green with stink and lack of stir, everything that late summer was an ugly mix of hot sweat and humidity.
