Alone in Loneliness
Covid 19 has had a huge impact on everyone’s lives worldwide. There is undoubtedly not a single person on this Earth that hasn’t felt it. As a young university student living away from home I have never felt more isolated. In school, I was always someone with a lot of friends, with plans to go to every weekend and the type of person who knew most of the people in the night club.
The Eternal Billie Holiday
The first time I heard of Billie Holiday was embarrassingly watching a 90’s guilty pleasure movie. The rich white kid gets into his nice car, puts on the radio and asks the blonde in the seat beside him, ‘Do you like Billie Holiday?’. She replies, ‘I love him.’ I didn’t get the joke. It took me nearly ten years to realise what an insult this is and to realise that I'd been hearing her for years. 'I'll be seeing you' in one of my favourite movies, The Notebook, 'Blue Moon' in Grease and some of her music even featuring in episodes of The Vampire Diaries. Songs I knew the lyrics to and would hum for a few days after I heard them.
Names and Faces
‘Everything alright, hun?’ Andy’s wife asked him after setting down a lukewarm fry on the table. Everything had been better than alright since Andy and his newly wed, newly pregnant wife had stumbled upon thousands in cash under the upstairs bathroom flooring of their new house. Everything had been great.
