Ever since I can remember Emily has loved nature- watching rabbits hopping around in the paddock next to the farmhouse where we lived, trying to catch butterflies in the garden, chasing around with her little fishing net, asking me impossible questions that I’ve had to Google answers to- “Mummy - why do ants walk in a line? Do they have families like us?”

‘’She’s waking up. Smack her again to shut her eyes. She can’t know where we’re goin’.’’ I hear my attackers' panicked voices grunt. I have no idea how much time has passed or where I am. I just know I need to keep my eyes firmly shut.

When I was a child with tormented dreams about the walls closing in or the noseless zombie under my bed, I would calm myself by reciting famous lullabies to distract my mind.
The Secret Beneath Kadeem’s Shop
‘’Extra spicy please, I like it drowning in sauce.’’ ‘’That enough?’’, the Kebab shop owner grunts. Under the luminescent yellow lights, I can see that this man has more than the average old guy’s eye creases. Perhaps it's the spitting oil that spins from the doner meat slab that causes his skin to crack or his 4pm-4am shifts.
