The Great Grape Heist
"Grapes? Grapes. There's something about the grapes!" I immediately shot up from a deep sleep, forgetting for a split second the crazy events that happened the night prior that had led Kori and I to this old, beaten-down barn, on an abandoned farm in the middle of nowhere.
Trying Global Cuisine Without Traveling
To this day, I have been unable to travel the globe, which is something I’ve always dreamed of doing. However, I’m still young and have plenty of life ahead of me to travel. I have always been enamored by different cultures and languages and I absolutely love learning about them. While I have never traveled to do so, I have hosted exchange students while I was in high school. That opportunity was the best thing that could have happened to me. I invited these strangers into my home, and by the end of the school year, they became family. While we’re not blood-related, I call them my sisters and brothers. My family shared with each of them, “United States Culture” and they shared with us, theirs; including holidays they celebrate, their social ways of life, and their food. I guess I can say that I have traveled and experienced new cultures without actually traveling. Pretty cool, right?
Struggling To Fit In - A Child's Cancer Journey
*Trigger Warning: This article briefly mentions suicide and death.* At eight years old, I wanted badly to be normal like every kid at my school, but it wasn’t the case. I put up a fight with my parents about going to school every morning because I did not want to be picked on and I did not want to deal with my bullies. Yes, eight-year-old kids bully others, and it’s harsh.
A Message to the Government
I wrote this poem approximately one year ago, in 2020, right after my town's Black Lives Matter Protest. A message to the Government, and anyone that sees,
What Nearly Dying Taught Me About Living
There’s this social construct within most of society that one needs to achieve the unachievable to be considered successful in life. People often wake up every day with the notion that they need to work their asses off to be noticed and seen. This notion often distracts many from what’s around them; both good and bad.
LGBTQIA+ Music Icons Shaped My Life
I’ve grown up with a love for classic music. Although I was born in 1999, I’ve been told by many that I’m living in the wrong era. My love for 70s music in particular stemmed from my introduction to the band, Pink Floyd as a kid. After my obsession with Pink Floyd grew, I expanded my taste in music to reach other 70s artists and bands, as well as some older artists from the 60s. Music has always been an escape for me. Growing up in and out of hospitals, I was able to put my headphones in, turn up my music, and disappear from the crazy life I was living; even if it was only for a little while. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like the lyrics behind some of the classic 60s and 70s songs have a deeper meaning than the lyrics of most songs today. Maybe my obsession with finding my own meaning within songs has contributed to my love for classic music.
Why We Owe Pride Month to Transgender People of Color
Pride Month is something I’ve noticed for years when growing up. It was something I was so enamored with and in awe of. Watching my family members who were openly out, celebrating their true selves, made me appreciate the significance of the month even more. However, it wasn’t until years later that my appreciation grew.
The History of Television in the United States
When many people think of television today, they immediately picture streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and even Disney Plus. However, most fail to understand what technological advances in history have led to the creation of the television platforms we currently use today. This article will discuss the beginning of television and the subsequent advancements made that led us to the technological advancements of today's television.
