First aid skills everybody should know
You never know when an emergency could strike—and you might be called upon to deliver emergency care to someone in need. Especially if you’re a parent or in charge of the health and safety of children or adults—but even if you aren’t—it’s essential to be prepared, and your preparation could mean the difference between life and death for an injured person. Here are a few first aid skills that everyone should know.

Watercolor
My watercolor journey started with a kit from the five and dime that came with twelve sticky, faded colors and a plastic-bristled brush that splayed out from its handle like an old scrub brush. There were no instructions on the box. There was no mixing palette. I “painted” on pulp construction paper. My supplies were, and for a long time remained, limited to those I received as holiday gifts and those I hoarded from holidays past.

The Space Between
No, I’m not referencing the 2001 mega hit song from Dave Matthews band (though I bet you’re humming it now) No, I’m not even referencing in any way the well-known Netflix show Stranger Things which focuses on this world and the other side of the world we occupy. Though that may make for a good reference down the road. I’m writing about environments, atmospheres and us. I’m writing about how space impacts people, not so much the distance between two objects but the overall influence that an environment has on those in it. Recently I was referencing a study that was done decades back at Harvard in which 8 elderly men were put in a sanctuary for 2 weeks, this sanctuary was intentionally outfitted from top to bottom to reflect a begotten era, a time from these men’s past — a time where they were younger, stronger, faster and more cognitively sound. From old Time magazines on nightstands being presented as current news, to rules being given to these men that all conversations they had were to be of the time era that they now were participating in. Each of these men were immersed in a world that they once occupied, their environment being reflective of better years, healthier and more robust times.

Can Music Heal the Brain?
Sounds are all around us, from birds chirping and waves lapping against a coastline to cars honking in traffic. But sometimes sounds are put together in purposeful ways to create a specific atmosphere or to express ideas or emotions. Such organized sounds are called music.

Be Your Own Definition Of Beautiful
Like most young women, I felt constant pressure to be a certain size or to look a certain way. The message I picked from the media was literally “You need to look perfectly beautiful (the way we define beauty). If not, you are a horrible person, and no one will love you.”

Decoding skincare ingredient labels
I recently reviewed my friend’s skincare products as her eczema seemed to be getting worse. Upon investigation I zeroed in on the culprit — cocamidopropyl betaine, a potential irritant was present in a very high percentage in the face cleanser she was using twice a day. As soon as we eliminated this product from her routine her skin started to heal.

Breaking a Generational Phenomenon
Whilst pondering upon a prompt for one of my articles I found what I believe to be a generational phenomenon. This article is hence part one of what will be a two-article dilemma in which I explore human behaviour and search for… answers. I encourage all who read this to comment and share their thoughts, as it could add to this never-ending discussion.

Women That Act Out Because of Love
One afternoon, my friend and I decided to watch the film Lady Bird. As I sat there in her dorm room, tears pooling at the mother-daughter relationship on display (despite it being my 30th rewatch), her roommate walked in and announced, “ugh, I hated that movie! The mom was SO mean.” This interpretation of events shocked me–I saw a complicated, depressed woman driven by love to act callously, she saw a mean girl. My friend’s roommate was not alone in this thinking. The character is considered to be immature, emotionally inept, and controlling.
