A Ghazal For You
THE GHAZAL, Minimum of 10 lines. Couplets. All lines must have the same number of syllables. Both lines of the first couplet end with the same word. (called a radeef) This word also ends line 4, 6, 8, etc. The word preceding the repeating word follows a different rhyme scheme but still rhymes with the other words before the radeef. No words can be used twice for this kaafiya. The ghazal (pronounced like “guzzle”) has a long and complex history, migrating throughout Africa, Asia, and the Middle East in its 1400 year history. The earliest ghazals date back to 7th century Arabia, shortly after the Islamic Caliphate was formed. Ghazals are romantic and tragic in nature, a tradition that many contemporary poets uphold. Psh, is that all? Ghazals are tricky and require each word to be carefully chosen, so a good ghazal may take a very long time to complete. Adapted Bing

Free Verse: This form of poetry has been popular since the 19th century1. It is not bound by rules regarding rhyme or meter1. Free verse tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech2 and gives poets greater freedom to choose words without worrying about rhyme and rhythm2. Bing

Last Week I Was Thrown Into A Tizzy
The visit with my primary physician was a week ago Monday. Because I had altitude sickness at the end of August, she ordered a follow-up x-ray. Then when listening to my lungs, she commented that something didn’t sound right.

Ballad Or Not?
A ballad is a form of verse, often a narrative set to music. Ballads derive from the medieval French chanson balladée or ballade, which were originally "dance songs". Ballads were particularly characteristic of the popular poetry and song of Britain and Ireland from the Late Middle Ages until the 19th century. Bing

What Can I Use To Remind Me?
My morning rituals are attached to the refrigerator as a reminder note. Does it work? I never look at it. I go to the fridge to get something out of it. I will occasionally check to see when a graduation or baby shower is scheduled. Because it’s a morning ritual I shouldn’t be forgetting but I do!

Laughter Yoga, Meditation And All The Rest
I have a group I meet with every week. I talked to them about the importance of our first two medicines. I tell them they are tears and laughter. Tears are first because we cry when we are born. Laughter is next as that happens at about 4/5 months.
