The Faraway Place
“We all start out brave and wild and free. No one starts out ‘fraid. When we arrive, we arrive as specs of dust and light – carrying with us the potential to be anything we dream of. But after floating down all that way, to the Faraway Place, some of us get lost and by the time we get there, we forget; forget that we were once kings and queens, mighty wizards with magical powers, and great adventurers and pioneers. Forget that we’d won great battles in order just to be there.

Daddy's not-so-little girl
I was raised by a single father in the early nineties and like most daughters, no matter my age, in his eyes, I was always “daddies-little-girl”. I represented everything that was holy and pure about the world and he would allow nothing to burst that shiny, little, (fantastical), bubble. He never even bothered to have the "Birds and Bees" talk with me as a child. I think he'd hoped I would never find out about those things and if (when) I did, he hoped he would never have to find out. As I grew older we had somewhat of an unspoken agreement when it came to talking about my love life: we didn't. The proverbial “don’t ask, don’t tell” clause in the father-daughter handbook. He didn’t ask and I sure as hell didn’t tell.
