RANDOM UNFOCUSED
An observation of life through the eyes of a senior citizen who may or may not be in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, but definitely has issues with memory, focus and crossing the thin line between reality and fiction. Said senior is also learning to speak her mind, no longer trying to please everyone, realizing her opinion counts too.

Dragon Riders
Dragons, can it be any better? I first discovered Pern in Anne McCaffrey’s The Dragonriders of Pern, a three book compilation offered on discount through a book club. As a young adult I would read pretty much anything with dragons and being on a budget, three books for the price of one instantly made it a winner in my eyes.

THE BUMP
THE BUMP An Inconvenient Truth Icy silver crystals in a bed of gray. A rare bit of sparkle where a chance ray of sun snuck through the clouds to reflect from the surface. Biting cold as the occasional gust of wind seemed to suck the heat from her body. Trees no more than single black brush strokes on the canvas of the horizon.

MABEL
Mabel froze at the creaking of the floorboard. Still as a mannequin, her eyes weighted open saw nothing, she sought the source of the sound, feeling for vibrations, sensing changes in body heat, even a subtle increase of air pressure giving clues. There, outside the window she sensed movement, more than just the wind and rain. There was the warmth that emanated from human bodies. They had come again to invade her space.

BEATS
His life or mine? The light flashes green, one beat per second, measuring my heart rate at rest. Of course it speeds up if I exert myself, I know this but test it anyway. Stand, walk, walk faster, jog. Always watching the subcutaneous flash of green on my wrist.

PEAR TREE
PEAR TREE The Forbidden Fruit “Hurry! He’s coming.” The words drove fear into my heart. At eight years old I was sitting atop a six foot block wall. Dressed in denim overalls and a T-shirt, like my brothers, I was participating in an annual coming of age ritual for the children in our neighborhood.
