Oscar Watch: 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri'
The essay contains many plot spoilers and should be read after watching Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. A single action sparks the events in the small town of Ebbing, Missouri. The actors in the film all emote an underlying pain despite the film taking some comedic liberties. As is common with most films based in the south, racism has its place and is rooted in the character of the town. The main characters are all very conflicted. Every character has elements that are admirable and other elements that are clearly meant to be abhorred. No one is the good guy in Ebbing Missouri.

It should go without saying but there are spoilers below, my essays are for people who have read the issue and want to talk more deeply about themes, canon and plot. Star Wars: Darth Vader #2 What Is the Barash Vow?
Find the write up on the previous issue of Star Wars: Darth Vaderhere. Charles Soule knows how to stretch out a story. The second issue of Star Wars’ new Darth Vader comic that begins just after Anakin turns on Obi-Wan and is outfitted with a cybernetic body. The first issue was the epilogue of Episode 3 where we learned why and how a Sith lightsaber glows red. This issue’s portion of the first arc is just Vader flying and killing Empire soldiers for no reason searching for a certain type of Jedi and then saying he was going to go get them. Not very impressive.

Star Wars: Captain Phasma #1 Can You Tell a Great Side Story With a Minor Character?
The Lucasfilm Story Group has to deal with a lot of moving parts. There are a lot of characters, time periods, and mediums to keep in a tight canon. And no single flowing canon spans the mediums that Star Wars does, comics, books, films, television are all the same world not just based on the same universe like say Marvel comics and the Marvel cinematic universe.

Star Wars: Darth Vader #1
Darth Vader is a bucket of rage in this new ongoing series chronicling his early years as a Sith Lord. Charles Soule already has a lot of experience in the Star Wars comic world writing Obi-Wan and Anakin, Poe Dameron, and the Lando mini-series. Giuseppe Camuncoli brings his art style from various Spider Man titles to the Star Wars universe.

The Paywall Will Be the Death of Streaming As We Know It
Paywalls will kill your favorite streaming service. Everyone thinks that the streaming services are killing cable and that’s the whole story. They’re wrong. Streaming services are also killing themselves. Sure, Netflix has been doing well from a content standpoint, they are putting out great stuff and they’re putting out a lot of it, but they are in debt and eventually just like in every other tech industry, someone else will come along and take them out. We still win; all of those Marvel shows, all of those comedy specials, House of Cards, Stranger Things, and everything else is already made it’ll still exist and somehow someway it’ll be available.

A Haunting Slice of Life by Jeff Lemire
In the back matter of the first issue of Royal City, Jeff Lemire says he fears people would call his new ongoing series a“slice of life” comic. He associates that phrase with being boring to retailers and readers. But it is what it is. Royal City is a slice of life comic by the general accepted definition of what the phrase “slice of life” means in anime, manga, comics and pop culture.
