Writing about a certain place can be difficult due to the unreliability of your emotional memory. For instance, my fondness for Jamaica is based solely upon the fact that, when I was working on a cruise ship, I was given every Thursday off so I could play for my vessel's cricket team, against a side from the local community.

Reach Out in a Time of Isolation
We are in ‘lock-down.’ And it's impossible to say how much longer we'll remain confined to our homes. As an Englishman, I am proud of the freedom, and liberties we all have on this fair isle. But, despite the advice regarding social isolation, we just didn't listen. So, a few weeks ago, Boris grounded us all once more, and temporarily curtailed those freedoms, and liberties. Again.

Soul Cakes: Simple, Historic & Warming
I was twenty years old when I ate my first soul cake. It was Halloween, and I was visiting the grandmother of my then partner. Her family were staunch Catholics, whilst I was raised a Protestant, in the Church of England (C of E). Well, I say 'raised' - unless we actively practice another religion, the English are all fairly much C of E by default whether we regularly attend church or not.
