The Lore Prevails
You cannot dismiss your spine, yet I was ejected from her as if she were some bay residing coral. She was fine without me despite years of me remaining solid in my foundations as the backbone that she said she couldn’t be without. You cannot dismiss your spine, but she did.
There is a toffee-colored glow emanating from the plexiglass that has fallen subject to the western sun. This kitchen has seen decades worth of arthritic fingers grappling at wooden utensils, sinking into floured dough and dusting the sills of this very window. One summer, after a shower of rain had brought the bank of the river to our doorstep, a sprout shot out of the ground. Two steps from the pavement and three from the clothesline, a stalk of something green was aligned, perfectly centered, with the middle post of our acrylic screen. This view took four years to develop completely, and five winter snaps nearly killed it off. But still, it remains.
I've Got You Covered
I am kept up by the sound of Elliot Smith. Seth is listening intently; he is letting his hands drift strategically down the frets of his guitar and he is occasionally singing along. Having a songbird as a boyfriend is not recognised as something that can be particularly turbulent but, in times like this, it is. See, there is an emotion fueling Seth’s current soulfulness and, instead of talking to me about it, he is nestling into the comfort of sounds and chords that feel the same way as he. The music can understand him better than any human and I have to trust that, when I cannot, the music will be enough to keep him strong.
