Dec. 24 - Earth Rising
*** December 24th *** On December 24th as Apollo 8 made its journey around the moon, accomplishing the monumental. There, on the moon’s horizon, a spectacular sight. Small, blue marble rising up over forbidding grey, cratered landscape. Three men could gauge the insignificance of our world, set in the backdrop of space, a rare gem shining in its setting, illuminated by an insignificant star in an ocean of millions of stars. Three men could assess the individual contributions and achievements of any of the small people on the surface of this iridescent sphere and see the utter meaningless of any of it in relation to the rest of the universe. Borman, Lovell, and Anders, instead, looked to the greater unity, the whole and saw a place of wonder. “…Merry Christmas - and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.”

Dec. 23 - Ode to the Children's Table
As a child, I remember with great glee being banished to the children's table. As I didn't often get to see my cousins, this was such great fun. We could horse around and talk about whatever we wanted without reproachful words or glances from the adults. And I loved it, when one year, my aunt - who was an adult - joined us at our table, preferring our company.

Dec. 18 - In the Making
Each winter, my friend Carol and I get together to Make. We like to make little things to gift to the people who make a difference in our lives. We generally want to make something to brighten someone's day, something a little sweeter - though we tend to the savoury, occasionally, too. We've called ourselves the "Twisted Sisters Candy Company" and we've made everything from cookies to marmalade, candied lemon peels to pepper jelly. This year, we made Almond Dream Cakes - Almond flour cakes infused with cranberries and lemon, filled with almond cream, and topped with lemon glaze. Delightful, in the extreme. This is one of my favourite Christmas traditions.

Dec. 16 - Snow Day
It is rare in Vancouver to get a snow day, but on the rare occasion, it does happen. I have to laugh when I see my students excited at the little bit of snow we do generally get, a few flakes compared to winters in Toronto. I don't begrudge them their enthusiasm for trying to sled, make snowmen and snow angels.

Dec. 15 - 'Tis the Season
When December rolls around and the winter break looms on the horizon, there is a call to friends that arises within. The desire to reconnect is strong. To catch-up with friends far away is a delight. To see people who are closer but with whom you don't get to spend enough time because of busy lives, is restorative. And it is also time to reflect on friends no longer here, to remember how you still hold them dear.
