Sunflower seeds and how they affect your health
Sunflower seeds are a delicious snack that is fun to eat and also are good for you. This product of the nut family is technically the fruit from the sunflower plant also known as Helianthus annuus. .Botanically speaking, however, seeds from sunflowers are a cypsela which is a "dry single-seeded fruit formed from a double ovary of which only one develops into a seed, as in the daisy family". When the shells are removed, the edible part is called the "meat", the sunflower kernel or the heart. In 2018, the global production of sunflower seeds was a staggering 52 million tons. Ukraine led with 27% and Russia was second with 25%. The United States, however, is number 10 on the list with 9%.

- Top Story - December 2020
Alex Padillo and Deb Haland are helping change the face of American politicsTop Story - December 2020
When I was growing up, the president, Vice President and others in the White House were always white males. I never really gave it a thought until I saw Colin Powell and Condolrrxa Rice serving in the Bush administration as Head of the Joint Chiefs of Dtaff and Secretary of State. During the Civil Rights era of the 1960s, the focus was on equal rights for African Americans and these two certainly proved that progress had been made. When Barack Obama won the US presidency in 2008 and 2012, he made history as the first president of color as a biracial man.

Random acts of kindness continue
This is my second entry into this Vocal contest because the benefits of giving and receiving have continued since my first story. I hope by the time the contest ends, I will have more news of good deeds to share. On December 10, I ordered a gift for my oldest son online and it was guaranteed to be delivered by the 21st. Imagine my surprise when on December 19 my money was back in my bank account without any type of notice. I did not receive an email or text telling me the product was out of stock but I assumed this to be the case. I went online trying to purchase the gift somewhere else but found it was too late to have it shipped before the holiday.

Reasons why more people die during the holidays
There are some things that you can do to ensure that health-wise your next Christmas and New Year will be merry and happy. For the past 2 decades, I have noticed an interesting phenomenon. In the community where I live, there is always an increase in the number of deaths between December 25 and January 1. Some experts blame it on holiday drinking and or drunk driving. If you have noticed this taking place in your neck of the woods you may be wondering about it as well. Let’s look at some other possible reasons why death increases around the holidays. People die every day so it’s to be expected that someone will pass away each day of the year. I had a cousin who died on December 23 in 1987, but it was because he fell trying to get out of the bathtub and hit his head.

Take your prescribed aspirin to prevent heart attack and stroke
A few years ago I read an online story about a man whose doctor had prescribed 2 daily 81 mg of aspirin. He said he missed one bedtime dose and the next day he had a heart attack. Not long ago I visited a stroke patient in the hospital and his first words to me were, "I should have kept taking my aspirin." My grandmother lived to age 91 and never had a heart attack. She had a mini stroke at age 88, but never lost consciousness or had to do any therapy. Her speech slurred one night and her right hand curled up. Those were the only symptoms she ever had. My grandma faithfully took her low dose aspirin as prescribed.

Why we hang on to Holiday fantasies
In April of 1967 I was 11 years old. It was my first Easter in a different home we had moved into. On that Sunday morning, my younger brother and I walked to a local store but instead of staying on the road, we went through a wooded area that separated the road we lived on from the highway. We followed a well worn path and saw what looked to be animal tracts. We were jumping for joy as we believed we had found the Easter Bunny's trail. Not long after this my grandmother pulled me aside one day and told me I was old enough to know that the Easter Bunny was pure fiction. Instead of being disappointed, I felt grown up and proud that I was old enough to know what my two brothers still did not.

Will Sonny and or Cyrus pay for Julian's murder on 'General Hospital'
William deVry fans continue to be loyal to the actor even after he was let go from his role as Julian Jerome. He seems too have accepted his situation and is moving on from General Hospital but those who love deVry and Julian have not. There is a petition that has garnered over 5,000 signatures of those who want Frank Valentini to bring back the former mob boss. There is also an outcry from social media for Sonny and Cyrus to pay for their crimes against Mr. Jerome. Julexis devotees are demanding justice but there is no way to know how this will play out.
