The Widow's Cabin
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Tom had heard the ghost story many times but never believed it to be true. As skeptical as he was, though, there was a part of him, looking at the lit candle now, that thought . . . maybe. But no, it was impossible; it must have been some stupid high schooler playing a cruel prank on the town.
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Maya’s family had owned the campgrounds for about 15 years, and she remembers being a little girl when the previous owners told her parents, “Stay away from the cabin in the woods, especially if the candle is lit.” They had always thought it was privately owned by someone, which is why it was set back in the woods, unlike the other cabins that surrounded the lake, until they finally looked at it and realized that no one was there. So this year they decided to clean it up and rent it out like the others.
Just Add a Glossy Taco
Going to the nail salon, for some, is a relaxing, serenity-like experience with little to no hassle. For a workaholic like me, it is a nightmare. Trying to find a time where I can go out for 2 hours, pick a subpar color that doesn't match what I really want, and then pay a fraction of my paycheck just to be annoyed when the nail techs file too close to my cuticles and make them red and inflamed? Yea, no thanks. But, this is what I did once upon a time; I didn't have polishes I liked enough t do my own nails, and I could never find anything that lasted as long as the gels that I would get at the salon, that is until COVID happened.
Confessions From a Paraprofessional
I hate my kids. I don't have any biological children, but I have always looked at my students as my kids. I understand that not all of them are growing up with parents the way that I did. Two parents who love unconditionally, support dreams like it's their job, and listen to you even when their day was harder. I try to be that person for them. Someone who will listen to them even when they tell me to go fuck myself. Who helps them, not only academically but emotionally. Who believes in them even when they don't believe in themselves. Yet now I hate them, and I dread going to school a little more every day.
Aftermath: Movie Review
There is nothing better than sitting at home, cracking open a white claw, and turning on the ear-scratching sound of a horror movie. Those first few loud, usually sharp, notes that make you want to crawl into your skin and turn it off. Tonight's feature is "Aftermath," produced in 2021 and directed by Peter Winther. Nothing new, but an addition to my collection of horror movie picks on Netflix.
The Perfect Weekend
Have you ever had a magical weekend? One where the world outside ceases to exist, and everything you could ever want is right there in front of you. Well, it finally happened for me after a long dry spell, filled with anxiety-ridden workloads and schedules that need a map key to understand.
