He was born in 1934 to a poor peasant family in Meixian County, Guangdong Province. The life of his family was always very hard. When he was little, he couldn't even put on his shoes in winter. After the founding of New China, he went through high school and university with financial aid. He graduated from the Biology Department of Sun Yat-sen University in 1961.
