I know what you did
Mom, I know you thought I would never figure out how you mocked me and invalidated me only when Dad was not around. I know you intentionally destroyed my sensitive feelings just to feel better about yourself. I know how you confused and misled me about who I really am, so different than your dream of who I should be. How you wanted me to live my life and how I chose to live my life did not match up. You couldn't see that living my life my way would make me happy. Or maybe you knew it would make me happy, and you did everything you could to stop it.

Pictures that are worth a thousand words
"What is this?" She looked up at me and smiled. "Of course, you would notice." My grandmother was my rock, providing stable ground to stand on. She was the first person in my life to allow me to be myself. We nurtured our relationship by sewing together, and I often feel her presence in spirit when I am making quilts.

It's in your head
“I’m gonna do it!” Gripping the handle of the gun cabinet door and staring at me, he stood there waiting to see what I was going to do next. It was at this moment I knew this was out of control. It took 2 days for me to realize it was merely a desperate attempt to manipulate the situation. I told him I had come to a realization about him, and I was not ready to share it. He was pressuring me to reveal it to him, but I wanted to talk to my therapist about it first.

How to start a weed wacker
“They’re finally here! Now we can actually do gifts,” she announced the moment I opened the door to my in-law’s house. The usual overabundance of random useless junk she found on clearance. She often tried to prove her love through material goods, but this year was different. She was known to keep price tags on her gifts and brought special attention to the clearance sticker on mine this year. She proudly announced how well the decluttering of the house was going by telling everyone she found my gift while cleaning out the garage. The subject of decluttering had re-emerged as a topic again over the last few months, and it was going better than it ever had in the past. I guess she was doing it for real this time.

An elephant from the phoenix's ashes
“Where are our skis? Oh no! Did we leave them there?” He looks at me from the corner of his eye and smiles. It is at this moment we realize we left our skis and poles sticking out of the snow around the corner from a ski lift, on the mountain we left a few hours ago. We need to call when we get home and in the door.
