The Iridescent Feathers
"Grant us the beauty of your soul, the piece of you that's light and shining." It always sounded impressive, echoing off the mountains. The coven lowered their hands to the heart center and quickly pushed their arms back up, releasing energy that came together to create a ball of light. It swirled outside the circle of witches and continued spiraling up high enough to blend into the brightness of the sky.

I'm fine. It's fine. Never mind.
The stressful climate on campus College can be the most exciting time in our lives, and for many it is. For traditional college students, typically aged 18-24, and for adult students, it means entering a time of heavy transition in our lives.

Cave Hunting
“Mommy, wagon,” Mia whispers. She stops walking and turns around. "Wagon," Mia repeats to us with a stunned expression. We round the curve and see a severely wounded dragon sitting on a tree stump with her eyes closed, taking calm, smokey breaths. Her wings are swollen, bruised, and covered in blood. One of her wings has a metal tourniquet clamped over the main artery. It's clear the dragon has been sitting for a while. Utterly exhausted, she briefly opens her eyes, just a crack to look at us. She doesn’t react to us, even though humans are perceived as threatening.

Dressed for the occasion
When I went to the adoption center, I saw him right away. He chose me, really, and this is one of the best parts of the adoption process. We never know what is going to happen. Across the room, I saw an adorable black kitten with long white whiskers. I walked over to the cage and gently placed my finger on the glass. I was in awe of him, a tuxedo kitten. I was unfamiliar with tuxedo cats and noticed his paws had white on them when he put one on the other side of the glass, right where my finger was. It was an instant connection.

Shielding Us From Evil
"Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say," he said. I liked his humor. It was dry, and it made me laugh. Mr. Adams, the science teacher, brought out the rolling cart with the microscale vacuum apparatus on it to demonstrate the vulnerability of a marshmallow.

The spectrum of sexy
I might be as heterosexual as we can get, or am I? With Pride month encouraging me to analyze where I fall on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, I put some time into recalling my sexual history and the desires leading me to the choices I’ve made. I’ve considered the possibility that I am a lesbian, which resulted in a few dates. I even got frisky, but the vibe was never right. Females are attractive enough to turn me on. However, I am much more easily aroused by male energy, and I become far more aroused. Perhaps I'm bisexual? I'm not so sure because I am not interested in having sex with a woman, as I would much rather entertain a penis.

S'moregasboard
“Do we have the stuff to make s’mores?” This is always the first thing I want to know when someone even mentions the possibility of a bonfire. No bonfire is complete without a s’more, and they hold an exceptional place in my heart. They're delicious and incredibly versatile.

How I met my dad
“Hello daughter, how are you?” “I’m good. No, I’m not good. Can I call you back tonight?” He called me minutes after I sent him a frantic one-sentence e-mail asking for his help. This came after more than a decade of separation. I needed his help, more than anyone else I could think of.
