You crack my shoulder against the door as you bundle me into the taxi. There’s no apology. You don’t even bother asking if I’m okay, even though you must have seen me flinch. Heard my gasp of pain. You just mutter ‘hurry up, hurry up’ under your breath. Like it’s my fault you’re running late.

Venezuela: Present Day Reaching into the far corner of the cupboard, Daniela slides a box out of the way and wiggles her fingers until they hook the delicate metal chain. She plucks the pendant free and smiles as she lets it swing back and forth, the violet blue stones glinting in the sunlight.

Face the Music
She catches herself staring at him. He acts like he doesn’t have a care in the world, waltzing into the room, tray of glasses balanced in one hand, a bottle of bubbly in the other. Someone cheers as he pops the cork, the golden liquid fizzing and foaming over the side, pooling onto the table. He should wipe that up, she thinks, before it leaves a permanent scar on the wood.
