Why Star Trek's new series is such a big deal
Ever since seeing Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) step up as Captain Pike on the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, fans have been petitioning for his own spin-off series. Pike is a character little seen in Star Trek besides his appearance in the original pilot, "The Cage," filmed for Star Trek which wasn't even aired on television until 1988. Before Discovery, we actually knew more about Pike from Bruce Greenwood's portrayal alongside Chris Pine's Kirk in Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness. So why did fans want more Pike that badly?

A Reading List for #BlackoutTuesday
Like so many across the nation, I have been lost this week. Lost in hurt and anger and confusion for so many of my friends. I must begin by acknowledging my privilege. I am a white woman of middle-class. I have never been pulled over with the fear, This is how I die.

10 Times Freddie Mercury was too much for this world
Freddie Mercury never really fell from popularity, let's be honest. But he has once again become a household name with last year's Bohemian Rhapsody biopic and Rami Malek's Oscar for Best Performing Actor. One of the reasons Queen's front man is so adored is his never-ending confidence and panache, saying, "I always knew I was a star, and now the rest of the world seems to agree with me." Other bouts of expression include lines like, "I'm just a musical prostitute, my dear," and "I dress to kill, but tastefully!"

You may know him as Mr. Mojo Risin, the psychedelic rock god of The Doors or you may know him as just a disturbing and strange artist who joined the famed 27 Club with his death on July 3, 1971. Both accounts would be true. Love him or hate him, James Douglas Morrison created a counter culture movement of rage that filled the 60s in stark opposition to the positive message of love from contemporaries John Lennon. Instead, Morrison tapped into the collective conscious of a generation enraged and disturbed by its wars and conspiracies and failures. Its betrayals.

Real Places in Tolkien's Middle-earth
John Garth is a well-known writer within Tolkien studies. His work focuses mainly on the ways that the Great War shaped Tolkien's works and entire mythology itself. Tolkien and the Great War discusses this at length. If you have seen the films or even last year's biopic, Tolkien, starring Nicholas Hoult, then you probably know a few of these examples yourself already.
