Gaming Systems as Storytelling Metaphors
I think a lot about storytelling because I write a lot and I’m a huge small-talker. I’ll chat your ear off for hours about the most mundane stuff because I find that I can find something passionate inside of the subjects. That’s why I think that in many videogames, the very systems of the game itself are metaphors for storytelling. What inspired this line of thinking in me was the SNES classic RPG (and greatest game of all time, I’ll fight over it) Chrono Trigger.

How to Instill Good Hygiene Habits in Your Kids
One of the things I’m most passionate about in my life is being a Dad. I frequently make the cliché that it’s the greatest thing I’ve ever done. Now that my daughter is a teenager, things have gotten more interesting regarding contests of willpower and authority, but we do quite well. That said, there are several things you can empirically do to be a good Father or Parent, chief among them is personal hygiene habits.

Some Carnivore Dishes
This is a partial sampling of my mostly carnivore diet that I eat each week. The top picture up there is spicy beef meatballs stuffed with cheese my little sister made along with some shallots and smoked paprika and garlic. Baked at 350 degrees for I think a half hour. The beef is just regular ground beef, because the fat content is really important for your diet, especially if you’re a carnivore (or mostly carnivore).

Things I'm Passionate About Part 14
Welcome to Part 14 of this series! 1. Restaurants I love dating, going out, hanging out with my friends and family, and trying all kinds of new foods and drinks. I love going to restaurants, pubs, and bars and seeing how they make steaks, or other kinds of meat I enjoy. I like expanding my pallet and life’s experience on different kinds of culinary masterpieces. I love sharing these experiences with other people and doing what I can to help businesses I enjoy thrive in the free market. My plans for this are to begin going through different restaurants, franchises or not, and sampling their menus, as healthfully as I can or not, and being a total foodie loser snapping pictures and writing reviews of dishes, drinks, ambiance, cleanliness, service and more. I’m going to start with my small town on the west coast of Canada and expand outward as time and travelling allows me. It’s probably not the best time to start something like this with the lockdowns going on, but I think there’ll be more than enough to write about even just in my town for a good long time.

Things I'm Passionate About Part 11
My passions Part 11, I’m trying to group these together more instead of making them so broad. Enjoy! 1. Metaphysics Metaphysics are the things that cannot be determined though objective measurements of the physical universe. In parapsychological circles, it’s the study of “science” or pseudo-science that encompasses supernatural phenomena, i.e. psychic powers, ghosts, mediumship, and the like. My interest in this spawned as a kid because what kid doesn’t love the idea of psychic powers or hearing ghost stories, especially ones that ACTUALLY HAPPENED!? My family and I used to experiment with Zener cards and telepathy games with some remarkably interesting results, though mom never let us play with Ouija boards because of an old family anecdote that scared the heck out of her. Once I got older and became a scientist, my interest didn’t wane at all, it got stronger. I found that I had become something of a debunker, but not in the sense that I was proving things to not be “real” or people to be charlatans, but more in the sense that the real magic, to me, was In explaining how these phenomenon could work, or be mistaken to work, based on the physical laws of the real-world and the exploits in human psychology. We’re amazing at fooling ourselves. For this topic, I’m going to be writing down my personal anecdotes and experiments, my suppositions for explaining how popular phenomena could work, and analyses of different cases amongst other things.

My Favorite Metroid-Vania Games Part 2
Continued from Part 1 Upon investigating, Samus gets infected along with the organic components of her power suit and it must be surgically removed. Even with that though it doesn’t look good for our heroine and she’s going to die. That is until one scientist gets the radical idea to create “a vaccine” using Metroid DNA to transform Samus into part Metroid in the hopes that it will fight off the X parasites infecting her system.

My Favorite Metroid-Vania Games Part 1
It’s funny that Metroid pretty much started the backtracking, exploration, slowly acquiring power ups to enhance your combat, movement, and exploration abilities genre and then Castlevania evolved into being like that, but now has nearly equal billing in the title of the genre. That’s fine though, as I am in deep love with both series (Despite not really having played Symphony of the Night, I know, I know, I should be ashamed).

My Review of Halo: Combat Evolved
You’ll probably think this is hilarious, but I’ve never played a Halo game before. I haven’t been an obsessive gamer for decades but I think of myself as better-than-casual and my Steam library and achievements are pretty decent and broad, but I could never get into most things that hordes of other people become slavering mad-people over. I HATE fanboys, mostly. As a result, I never caught Halo fever. It wasn’t until recently that my best friend started telling me all about the story and nagging me to play it that I decided to give it a shot if I could find it on sale. Well, Steam is having their Autumn sale at this time of writing, and the Master Chief Collection was 23 bucks Canadian, so I say the heck with it and purchased.

Things I'm Passionate About Part 13
Part 13 of things I’m passionate about. 1. Gum I love gum. Straight up, it’s good for helping with an oral fixation, like the kind you can get from smoking or habitual eating. Whether that be boredom eating, emotional eating, or whatever. It can also change your mood depending on the taste or smells it evokes. I know some people think that that’s related to things like aroma therapy which a lot of people think is hokum, but certain flavors of gum, like with teas can help change my mood, and even if it’s psychosomatic, isn’t that kind of the point? I love the taste, I love using it as a way to help stave off my overeating habits, there’s some studies that point out that chewing primes your digestive enzymes and so having no food go in after chewing could mess with your hormones, but I’ll have to do more research on that. I’m going to be writing about the science of gum chewing and the origins and manufacture of gum itself, but also reviews on all the different types of gum I try and enjoy.

Things I'm Passionate About Part 12
Part 12 of my passionate series of planned writing! 1. Publishing Books One of the angles I’ve tried to experiment with as a side hustle since becoming crippled was creating books. Print on demand stuff through Amazon’s KDP service. It’s fun, it’s free, and anyone can do it. Do some research, make some books, (custom journals, puzzle books, game books, notebooks, logs for different subjects etc.), do some advertising and build a following, and let the passive money roll in through your own promotion and Amazon’s organic traffic ranking. It has worked really well for me so far and I encourage other people to learn about it and try it if you want to have some new ways to monetize your passions or businesses and side hustles. I’ve started a whole publishing company with its own site and everything and have been growing it from there. It’s still a work in progress but you can check it out here: http://nightbladepress.com
