I Taught a Student Who Killed Himself
The recent shooting in Nashville has me thinking about my career as an administrator in public education. For years educators have sounded the alarms about violent and potentially harmful students in the schools. The responses vary from year to year, state to state, school to school, and child to child. No consistent response exists to increase safety.

I Retired My “Just Shoot Me” List
When we were younger, my husband Randy and I laughed when we witnessed people doing things that we found unimaginable. We couldn’t comprehend losing our hair, teeth, eyesight, and/or mobility. We thought we were invincible and didn’t understand that aging is a life event that everyone experiences — including us. Though this was a hard pill to swallow, the truth is we will all (hopefully) grow old, better than the other option.

How a Woman Survives in a Man’s World
Listening provides compassion and empathy. Sometimes that is all that is needed. I’ll always remember a meeting when I sat listening to an employee share her concerns. Towards the end of our conversation, I learned a lesson.

Puppetry of the Penis
My husband and I explored Vegas by car yesterday morning with the intent of deciding where we would return in the evening. As we passed a sign advertising a show, Puppetry of the Penis, I pointed it out and commented we should turn in there. My husband’s hearing aids must not have been turned up or he simply tuned out the sarcasm in my voice, started to turn into the parking lot. He asked, “Are you serious?”

How to Love Enough to Raise Responsible Adults
While standing in Target I heard a mother say, “Put that back on the shelf. One. . . Two. . . Three. . . I mean it. Put it back. . . I’ll count to three and then there will be consequences. I am going to beat your butt. Now do as I told you. Do it now.”

I Am Wondering if Full Body Bubble Wrap Can be Purchased on Amazon
Age makes a body unbalanced. Somedays it seems I am as wobbly as a toddler and a small pebble can trip me up. If I bend down too quickly, I get dizzy. When I turn my head to look behind me, it freezes at my shoulder. And the idea of doing anything fast is a fantasy.

Hands Hold Love
Accepting hands I recall the emotions associated with dating. At the age of 17, dressed in only enough clothes to cover the essentials, with cold drinks in hand, Randy, my boyfriend then, my husband now, and I prepared for the three-hour rafting trip.

A Golf Handicap Prompted an Emmy Performance
I stood on the tee box staring down the fairway. The tall weeds just beyond the yards of sand and gravel caused intimidation, but then there isn't much about this game that doesn't provide challenges. I realized long ago, golf's not about the score but the sunshine, exercise and fellowship with friends. In fact, I usually don't keep score. Why bother? That would be depressing.
