The very emotional trip to Belize
Last year my first girlfriend, Tania Thakur, died in Kanpur, India. When I found out the news I was very shocked. I went to visit her family a few months ago. Her parents wanted me to take some of her ashes and put them in the Mopan river in Belize. In our religion some ashes are put in a river as a homage to the passing of the soul.

That scary night near the river
It was the night of November 30, 1994. It was about 10 pm. The Gomti river was nearby. My girlfriend Pooja Sheshadri’s house in the Gomti River Colony near the river. I said good night to her. She gave me a nice hug and then went inside her house. I smiled as I looked at her. I had to ride my motorcycle to East Charbagh Colony, which was more than 15 km away. My house was there and my parents and younger brother were waiting for me that night.

My first few years in Canada
I am 44 years old and I think I have lived a very good life so far. I was fortunate to live in a few countries and my last 26 years in Canada have been very nice. However, the first two or three years in Canada were difficult. For me, those years were my coming of age years.

That Day at the Dehradun train station
When I was 14 years old I was living with my family in Dehradun, India. Each summer I would go to my grandparents’ house in Lucknow, which was more than 550 km away. My good friend Rajeev lived there as well. He was a neighbour’s son in my grandfather’s housing colony.

Basanti - my goldfish extraordinaire
For a few months in 2004 I had a goldfish that I kept at my work. Those days I worked three days from home and two days at my office. I kept it at my home in a little glass bowl of water. I named it Basanti or ‘yellowish’ in Hindi. I was very sad due to personal reasons back then for a while but Basanti would always cheer me up.
