7AM Room 4M
Dear [redacted], Enclosed, one photo. See how the colours of my room match my eyes? My citadel has a lilac garden, a river behind barbed wire.
Sensory Processing/The Art of Silence
The long, tooth-grip peel of tape, A flamacue of pennies on hardwood, A power-drilled tympanic ache. Angles ground, shards thrown
Ends of ends, I tie, ineffectively, slip like cut silk through, over open hands. In attempt to encourage, two fingers crossed instead,
The path was lit for failure, the date observed with restraint. “Mark my presence, my passing, with lanterns; cast me among the ancient.”
It is too early in the morning to be picking through the detritus of a party. Chairs draped in forgotten jackets have been shoved apart haphazardly, purse trinkets glinting on the carpet. A sticky swathe of elderflower wine arcs across the table below the announcement board, paper cups crumpled one-handed into the waste bin and scattered. A small retirement gathering, yet such chaos. I gasp to myself, reaching for a piece of litter closest to me.
The Polyphony of Autumn
It did not rain on the day you passed, but through tears, the sky is upturned. Those eyes were my sky. You wouldn’t let me call you beautiful, would not allow it of anyone—but how quick you were to throw roses at the feet of others. Your intuition and empathy was so profound, it often wounded you. Thoughtful to the point of pain, you were an open book.
A constant drip of serum slowly melts the edges off of the emergency department as it flows through the port on my chest, replenishing and synthetically soothing. This wing is colossal, lined with individual frosted cubicles, each occupied by organic and non-organic personae. Most of the latter are a cluster of Phase Five or Six droids, models that are ten years outdated. Owing to the cessation of updates, their hardware fails when exposed to certain environmental stresses—and the closer they get to their Planned Obsolescence date, the more intentionally destructive they become.
