Shopify vs Amazon

The new Shop app by Shopify combines stores into a natural shopping experience. Different from its competitors, Shopify made the service only available as a pure mobile app

When considering e-commerce marketplace popularity, Amazon is at the top of the chain.

Over 45% of all product searches start in Amazon’s search bar, and Amazon owns up to 50 % of all UNITED STATES online retail sales.

Shopify is best known for its eCommerce platform that has allowed over one million businesses to create online stores. The platform also allows the creation of third-party apps and plugins, which has helped create a powerful developer community and made it also easier for businesses to make use of Shopify with their existing PoS, communication, and delivery services.

In the year 2019, Shopify launched significant services and purchases that would help them compete directly with Amazon and Walmart. In July 2019, they launched the Shopify satisfaction Network, and also in October 2019, they got six River Systems, maker of cloud-based satisfaction software, and programs that are for mobile.

As Shopify has gotten nearer to competing with the efficient eCommerce and satisfaction processes, they've been missing one essential component: a marketplace for customers.

New Shop application consolidates Shopify orders and provides limited shopping features

Shopify launched a brand new app called Shop that makes shopping at Shopify-powered shops more cohesive. Similar to Amazon, every order that’s created from a merchant on Shopify is viewed and tracked in the app. The Shop application additionally allows users to follow stores and directly buy products through the app.

When a person follows a shop, the app aggregates and displays some of the products from each store on a page that is single. Tapping on a store or product starts the store in a browser view inside the app.

Shopify has brought a store-first approach instead of leveraging it as a shopping search motor. Whenever you search for a shop, you’re offered with a long list of shops that match your query. When you follow a store, you might be then presented with a small list of products from that store.

What's missing through the app could be the ability to seek out products across multiple stores. That would create a marketplace that is true to Shopify and enable customers to find and purchase products similar to how Amazon.com does it today.

The app is also limited by just iOS and Android. Similar to Quibi's launch that is recent, Shopify didn't release a web version of the app. Perhaps when and if they produce shopping that is the product-based engine, they'll port the app to the Shop.app website.

Shopify and Shop app as the option better than Amazon

Also with Shop app’s limitation, it’s a big action in the right direction for Shopify. The app gets them closer to not only providing a much better shopping experience than Amazon, but it also lays the basis for a market where consumers can find and purchase products easily.

Shopify has developed a marketplace with a robust product search engine, it’s likely they will get a significant amount of business that is currently on Amazon to move to their platform. That's because Amazon has been uncovered for using merchant data and then competing against them by making and selling similar products.

Conclusion

Unlike Amazon, Shopify has had an ethical business approach and does not compete because of the companies that use its platform. At this time, Amazon merchants don't have an option, but a Shopify marketplace might finally give them one.
