It's happened to all of us at some point or another, you're in a hurry and you need to open an app, but it won't open. Perhaps you're using your phone to try and open an app, or it could be happening across your entire computer — the point is something isn't working the way it should be.

From forgetting to close out of apps on the iPhone when you reboot it, to getting a blue screen on a Windows PC, there are many reasons that your apps may not be opening right.

Reboot the whole computer

Sometimes apps will not open on your computer. This could be due to a number of issues, from simply needing to reboot the whole computer, to having an outdated version of an app or even malware. If you are having trouble with an app and it won't open, try the following steps: Reboot your computer Restarting your computer can be a quick way to get back on track.

If you're having trouble with an app there are a few things you can try before calling Apple Support. First try restarting your Mac by holding down Command + Option + R and then clicking Restart. If that doesn't work, try restarting again by shutting down your Mac's power and restarting it again.

Check for updates It's likely that there is an update available for the problem app. Check for updates by going to the App Store icon in menu bar > Updates > Update All Apps. If there is no update available then contact Apple Support as this may indicate a deeper problem with your Mac or app install process.

Uninstall and reinstall app

Apps that won't open are usually the result of a corrupted or incompatible app. To fix this problem, try the following steps. Uninstall and reinstall the app If you're having problems with an app that isn't working correctly, try uninstalling and reinstalling it. This will remove any corrupt or conflicting pieces of code that might be causing problems.

To uninstall an app: Press and hold an app on your home screen until it wiggles, then tap the X on the corner of its icon. If you don't see this X, then tap and hold the icon until all apps start to jiggle, then tap the X on each one.

Tap Delete, then confirm by tapping Delete again. To install an app: Go to App Store > Updates at the bottom of your screen and tap Purchased > Not on this iPhone > Search for a specific app or scroll down to see all your apps alphabetically. Tap an app in search results or on your list of purchased apps; if prompted, enter your Apple ID password if necessary; tap Install after reading any Terms & Conditions; when installation is complete, the new version appears on your Home screen (if there is more than one version available).

Try a different browser

If you are having trouble opening apps, try these steps: Close all running apps and restart your device. Check to see if the app is available in the App Store. If it's not, you can reinstall it. Try using a different browser (like Chrome or Safari) to open your iTunes Store or App Store page.

You may be able to download the app from another browser that works for you.

Run a virus scan

Itunes won't open? If you're getting a "can't open iTunes" error message, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and fix the problem. First things first: Make sure your computer is up to date If iTunes isn't working, the first thing you should do is make sure your computer is up to date.

If it isn't, install any available updates for Windows or macOS. This should also fix issues with other apps that rely on Apple's software libraries, such as GarageBand and Apple Music. If it doesn't, go on to the next step. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes 12 iTunes 12 is the most recent version of Apple's media player and store.

It was released alongside OS X Yosemite in 2014, but it hasn't been updated since then — except for security patches issued by Apple. If you want to update your version of iTunes so that it works with new iPhones or iPads (or just stop receiving this "can't open iTunes" error), uninstall iTunes 12 and install a newer version of the software from Apple's website: Go to apple.com/itunes/download/.

Click Download Now at the bottom of the page.

All in All...

First, attempt to re-open your apps by force quitting the programs from your Dock or from the History section of the Force Quit window. Launch iTunes again and see if apps will now open. If the issue doesn't subside and you've closed all open applications without resolving the problem (or haven't closed an application), then it could be that your computer's memory is full.

Try freeing up some memory by using these tips. If, after freeing some memory, you still can't open apps, a possible solution is to restart your Mac.
