How I Got My Article to Be a Top Google Search Result

About two months ago I had hit a block in my writing. Inspiration wasn’t flowing as it had before and I found myself in a slump of creative nothingness. In my time of desperation, I began writing about any and all topics that crossed my mind. My documents folder grew thick with titles like “The Craze Behind Squishmallows” and “Who Haunts the White House.”

Ideas had a way of coming and going, but no true inspiration stuck around! That was until I was scrolling through Vocals Staff Picks page, hoping to come across something that would ignite the fires, and I found what I had been looking for all along!

Jonathan Sim had previously written an article on the best order to watch the Marvel Universe movies in. He not only found it successful in search engines, but made quite the paycheck off of the informative piece! Now, I’m not really a fan of action or superhero movies, but I knew I had a level of expertise in a genre that could translate to views just the same - horror! So I set out to craft the ultimate guide of how to watch the most prevalent horror franchise in modern times: The Conjuring.

I wrote the piece based on my personal opinions of how the movies fit together and the chronological order based on real events portrayed in the films. After publishing the article, it saw very little success immediately. And with that, my slump continued.

It wasn’t until about two weeks ago I noticed a sharp rise in my reader stats on Vocal. Confused, I logged onto the platform for the first time in a while to find that my article on the order of The Conjuring was receiving quite a bit of attention. I thought maybe someone had shared it or it ended up somewhere else on the internet, and after a quick search on Google, I discovered the reason for this uptake.

That's me!

My article was being used as a reference for Google! I was so excited at the idea of being a top search result, I had a small freak out! But this didn’t happen by accident.

I’m willing to bet you didn’t click on this article to read all about the inner workings of horror sagas. So let’s talk about how I was able to get my article to be at the top of search results!

First thing to know is that I utilize Search Engine Optimization(SEO) in some of my titles. In this case, my title was, “The Correct Order to Watch the Conjuring Universe Movies In.” This title works on a few levels:

1. While I used the more formal term of “correct” the article will still show under results for “the right order” or “what order”.

2. I made sure to include “The Conjuring” as well as the “universe” end, because my article encompassed the entire movie franchise, not just those that included the sagas namesake. This made my article cover broader search terms.

3. Overall, my main goal was to make this title short and to the point. Titles can be difficult, but SEO works best when titles are kept as simple as possible. You may reach a slightly smaller audience, but the audience you do reach will be more likely to click on your article over others that are too wordy of confusing.

Other tools I use to promote my articles are social media and word of mouth! I run an Instagram blog and am always sharing my articles, but even if you don’t have a business profile, you can always share with your family through social media and ask for their support! The more traffic driven to your article will put it higher on the search results list!

But overall, SEO is the most valuable tool in your arsenal to attain a high search result reach. I can’t guarantee your article will come out as number one, but by using the method of utilizing keywords and targeted titles, you’ll find a much higher turnover in those who see and click the link to your work!
