Klancic Street

Fairy tale. This is the first word that comes to mind as you approach the enchanting town of Vrbnik on Krk Island,Croatia. Nestled on the landward side, the town is surrounded by vineyards where the indigenous Vrbnik Žlahtina wine variety is cultivated. The name Žlahtina derives from the Slavic adjective “žlahten,” meaning noble. The natural beauty of this landscape is complemented by the sky-blue sea, whose gentle murmur can be heard beneath the 50-meter high rock upon which Vrbnik is perched.

As you draw nearer, the first sight to greet you is the bell tower of the parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is soon followed by the imposing walls of Frankopan Castle and the cluster of little houses, reminiscent of the nearby Žlahtina grapes, slowly entering your field of vision.

We weren’t exaggerating when we mentioned fairy tales at the beginning. According to local legend, Vrbnik and its surrounding area were once home to many mysterious creatures, including “malčići” (little ones), mischievous little beings who were always up to something. One of the most famous tales involves a “malčić” living in a house on Roč Street, who would ask the residents for macaroni every day for lunch. This local specialty is typically reserved for holidays in the town.

Amid the maze of narrow, winding streets in Vrbnik, there is one that stands out: Klančić, one of the world’s narrowest streets. Navigating through Klančić requires more skill than a stroll down a wide avenue. It’s not about the size of the street but the challenge it presents.

Klančić’s narrowest part is just over 40 centimeters wide. We wholeheartedly recommend that you measure your waist before attempting to pass through this alley to avoid getting stuck halfway. Be sure to tuck in your stomach as you embark on this unique adventure.

As you make your way through the medieval stone blocks that have stood for centuries, imbued with the scent of salt and sea, you might find yourself thinking that the “malčići” were up to no good again. Perhaps these little imps built a street in Vrbnik through which only they could pass. That would certainly be right up their alley.

Exploring Vrbnik

The charm of Vrbnik extends beyond Klančić. The town's rich history and cultural heritage are evident in its architecture and traditions. The parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with its bell tower visible from afar, is a significant landmark. This church, alongside the ancient walls of Frankopan Castle, provides a glimpse into the town’s storied past.

Vrbnik’s narrow streets and alleys are a delight to explore. Each turn reveals a new facet of the town’s character, from quaint houses to hidden courtyards. The local legends and tales add a layer of intrigue to the experience, making every corner seem like a step into another world.

The Legendary Malčići

The stories of the malčići, the mischievous little beings of Vrbnik, add a whimsical element to the town’s history. According to legend, these creatures were known for their antics and pranks. The tale of the malčić demanding macaroni for lunch every day is just one of the many stories that have been passed down through generations. These legends contribute to the town’s fairy-tale atmosphere, making it a place where history and myth intertwine.

The Vrbnik Žlahtina Vineyards

No visit to Vrbnik would be complete without experiencing the local wine culture. The vineyards surrounding the town are renowned for producing the Vrbnik Žlahtina, a white wine that is deeply rooted in the region’s tradition.
