In the 90s, Mennen introduced a deodorant in various scents that they named Teen Spirt. Unaware that Teen Spirit was a deodorant, Cobain wrote the song for the Nevermind album.

Loved this! Well done for reminding us of the story behind that epochal 1990s song, which not everybody knows. In a way that's at least similar, Coke and Levi jeans gave us several chart hits throughout the 80s and 90s that began life as advertisements for their brands (First Time by Robin Beck, for example, was written for a Cherry Coke ad). Nirvana managed to reverse that tendency with Kurt Cobain brilliantly constructing a suggestive alternative meaning to a throwaway allusion to his deodorant he heard, and then incorporating it in lyrics which both spoke to and gave voice to to an entire disaffected generation. What a songwriter, and sadly missed. Thank you for remembering him, Babs, in a great limerick to start my morning on!

We can occasionally play music while we work in my current workplace and any time Smells like Teen Spirit comes on, there is usually 3 or 4 people singing along, even if all they know is a single line. An iconic song! And a great piece Babs!
