Simpler Times
An Acrostic
Horseshoes and hand grenades, yes, that’s the phrase
Only times getting close actually counts
Receptacle for luck if ends point up
Standing yards apart, guardians of stakes
Eye squint and aim, toss up and out, swing through
Shooting for a ringer and its rattle
Honing pitches, hopes of consistency
Often overlooked in present pastimes
Erased tradition in a modern age
Simplicity we’ve traded for new thrills
Author's Note: I live in Louisville, Kentucky and this week is Derby Week. To celebrate the running of the 150th Kentucky Derby, I've written three horse inspired pieces. Check out the other two below.

I love how acrostics are back in! “Honing pitches, hopes of consistency” is my favourite line, but as always, you do a lot with a little D.K. 👏🏾
Oh yes, there's like soooo many traditions that's been erased, including this. Loved your Acrostic!
Love the sound of them hitting the ringer! And it's awesome you live right there in Horse Haven. I think I'm jealous, haha.
Can’t remember the last time I played horseshoes! Your poem really brought the memories back to life!
Fantastic poem! 🍅🦊🇮🇱
Now I want to play!! This was wonderfully feel-good in its simplicity. Well done :) (I also did an acrostic today...must be in the air, lol.)
