Mass Effect (2007) is Great Fun!
Mass Effect was a game that had been on my radar for a while and, back in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdowns, I managed to get the whole series at a steal - Steam games were on 70, 80, and sometimes 90% discounts at the time.
Greg SeebregtsPublished 2 days ago in GamersIs the Flea Market and Found In Raid Healthy for Tarkov?
Recently, there has been an on-going discussion online about Tarkov, the flea market, and found in raid. All components to this game that have been divisive since they were introduced years ago. Band-aids to problems deeply rooted in the game’s ecosystem and functionality. The question of should these mechanics be removed is simply not a deep enough question to ask. There are too many layers in this problem that spirals out of control the moment you begin to think about it on a deeper level. For the longest time, Nikita and BSG were very steadfast about these mechanics not going anywhere. Especially the flea market. They made their bed and slept in it. However, as things have gotten rather.... tumultuous recently for BSG, curiously enough, Nikita has been more open to potentially adjusting these features for the future of the game. To what extent exactly, we’re not entirely sure, but these questions are still good to ask regardless. Everyone has a different opinion of the flea market and found in raid; some want it to stay because it is so integral to the game, especially considering there are other mechanics in the game built around the flea and FIR. While others want it gone so we can get those early Tarkov feelings back once again. It’s a tough position to be in as a developer. No matter what you do, people are going to be upset. So today I wanted to look at these features a little more closely and try to dissect the pros and cons of both keeping them around as well as removing them from the game. Again, it’s just a conversation; and while I will add my own personal interjections on the matter, at the end of the day, this is BSG’s game. They have the final say as to the mechanics that stay or get axed. So, keep that in mind as we go through this discussion.
'Bumpers & Broadswords' is Rad
If you've been following this blog, you know how enamored I am with mongames. Two mongames that have captured my interest are Metal Walker and Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule GB, not because of their quality but their potential. In the case of Metal Walker, it has an unreasonably high enemy encounter rate and Capsule items that do little to add consistent strategy to the game. While Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule GB is lacking because of its constant grinding and dice rolls that often determine the outcome of battles. However, the saving grace for both games lies in their battle systems. Metal Walker with its Flip Battles, turn-based pinball or flipper, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule GB with its monster-raising chess. The innovation of these battle systems embedded in me a desire to enjoy them without the baggage, and I'm pleased to say Bumpers & Broadswords delivers just that.

Richard Patrick Jr.Published 7 days ago in GamersWhy Haven't Indie Mongames Caught On?
Indie games have often been an outlet for retro video game genres. Of course, what is considered nostalgic for the developer depends on the games they grew up playing. In the past, side-scrolling platformers were the genre of choice, but now it's mongames. Mongame is a genre that revolves around collecting and raising creatures, popularized by the role-playing game Pokémon. Recent years have seen a resurgence of mongames, with games like Temtem, Monster Crown, and Nexomon: Extinction releasing last year. However, indie mongames have generally failed to resonate with many Pokémon fans. While there is demand for mongames, the indie games that belong to this genre have missed the mark in three significant ways.
There’s Only One Way to Increase Tarkov’s Performance
There aren’t many games like Tarkov out there. It requires not just a lot out of you, the player, but also the equipment you are running, especially your PC. This game has had its fair share of performance issues over the years. And to be brutally honest, it still does. As the scope of the game has gotten bigger, and BSG’s ambitions with the game grew alongside that, so too did the requirements necessary to run the game effectively. The older maps and locations around Tarkov are mostly optimized, but Streets is still the main problem out of all the maps in the game. The sheer size of the map compounded with the fact it has already gotten one expansion and there are plans for at least one more, means the map is just so large and filled with items that most PCs are going to struggle playing it. Even offline raids with no AI scavs spawning in, the map doesn’t perform well.
Henchmen and Goons
When most of us think of overcoming challenges in an RPG, we tend to focus on our personal characters (or our party of characters), and what things they are capable of doing themselves. And while that makes total sense for tales of heroic fantasy, where our characters are the fulcrum on which the universe turns, not all games operate this way either thematically, or mechanically.

"There is malice in this sword. The dark heart of the smith still dwells in it. It will not love the hand it serves, neither will it abide with you long." —Melian on Anglachel (The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Chapter XXI: "Of Túrin Turambar")

Comic Book Curse

Explaining Tarkov Wipes in 6 Minutes
Tarkov is a game that has what are called wipes. Moments in the game's life where either a large content update is being dropped large enough to require everyone to start over to properly test the new features, or enough time has passed that the current game state needs to be reset. Depending on how long you’ve played Tarkov you most likely have experienced at least one wipe. You’ve also most likely seen all the memes about when’s wipe? Or that the wipe is going to be on a Thursday. These are old school Tarkov memes that have been around for many years, and still get tossed around whenever the developers begin to hint at the notion of the game resetting in the near future.
